Which I think is another reason people are getting behind Clarkson. Management is seen as the entity which takes a good thing and ****s it up.

In all honesty, I don't think the latest series was that special, either. A shakeup was needed no matter what.

Its a tough one though. They could have some real fun with an American-sized budget, but which of the US networks would let them get away with the political incorrectness? Would that aspect even work if it was US-owned and based show?

I heard there were entire empty towns for sale for the sort of money that US networks wouldn't even blink at. Imagine the fun they could have with a whole town to race through/blow up.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

The liability insurance would cost way more than the town itself. Mythbusters wrecked it by accidentally shooting a cannonball through a neighborhood.

I honestly don't know what a bigger budget would gain them. Maybe more episodes in a series? For a while there they were only doing like 6 episodes.

In the budget supercar episode (S20E03) they made a street circuit in an abandoned town and raced on an airstrip in Spain.

The extent to which their political incorrectness comes out on the show is basically "politicians are idiots and don't make intelligent laws regarding cars." This isn't any worse than Colbert or Stewart's lampooning and lambasting politicians. In fact, it's pretty tame. For all of Clarkson's political opinions, compared to some he may as well be Wayne Brady.

Executive producer Andy Wilman has now resigned. May has made it more clear that he is not interested in returning without Clarkson, although his agent says that they are still talking. At the same time, someone leaked that Clarkson got news the day of the incident that he might have a tumor. Clarkson himself played it down a bit and said that it was not an excuse for his actions, but you have to wonder who leaked. Methinks someone is trying to make a deal.

The cancer scare was benign and Clarkson is right now trying to close a deal with Netflix.

Various BBC people have also pointed out that Clarkson wasn't technically fired, his contract was just not renewed, and he could still be hired. Which is true, but they were anxious to make it appear otherwise just weeks ago.

Here's what I think is going on: The BBC wanted to just replace Clarkson directly with another presenter and continue with minimal disruption. This seems to have failed - the rumored front runner declined, May has said flat out that he is not joining a Top Gear like that, and now Andy Wilman is out as well. This leaves the option of reformatting the show in a major or minor way. I suspect that BBC floated this balloon to the stations it sells the show to around the world, and it went over poorly. Now they don't know what to do, so they're opening up to Clarkson rejoining again in some form, as a compromise to keep the rest of the team around.

Shows how out of touch they are, that they're just now realizing they killed their golden egg-laying goose. Sucks to be them.

I think the BBC should stick to their guns and not let financials overrule what is right. They should not be scared to reformat the show, or declare it as a failure if it doesn't have the same sort of success as its previous incarnation did. Some people will hate it simply because it isn't Clarkson's Top Gear anymore.

But that's not exactly a good thing. Or rather: BBC's behavior is commendable.

My standpoint remains as it was - it was the last in a long line of transgressions, which makes it correct to fire him. Everything else is beside the point.

Thats a tricky one. On the one hand the BBC is held to a higher standard than private companies because it is publicly funded. On the other hand, its publicly funded. If you want to watch any TV legally in the UK you have to contribute to funding the BBC. There is a certain argument that doing what they can to increase their exports can reduce the costs to the British public so perhaps if you're going to bend the rules it should be for a publicly funded organisation and not a billionaire's sports team.

I completely disagree: you fund public television not in order to make money — BBC not being dependent on advertising revenue is one of the reasons the show could exit in the first place, because Clarkson, May and Hammond didn't have to cater to advertisers. Moreover, I don't think money should overrule basic rules of human behavior. I don't think you're entitled to more leeway just because (you think) you're famous and important — whether or not you're working for a publicly or privately funded entity is besides the point.

I was hoping for Netflix, but Amazon is fine. I started with Prime a few months ago, they've just bundled Amazon Music into it too, so now I can put Spotify back down to free, save £10 a month, and next year watch Not Top Gear. Sorted.

Well, they all have jobs again.

Looking forward to this new show, I have a feeling they will have complete freedom to do anything - let's just hope it's not James cooking some elaborate meal. And if it is, may he be cooking from the back of a moving caravan.

Gizmodo is reporting the budget for the new show at $250 million for 36 episodes:

Amazon's New Car Show Has a Rumored Budget of $250m

That's a lot of money, if true - they would be able to use La Ferraris as stunt vehicles.

But this would at least allow some interesting excursions around the world in a manner only an Imperialist Brit could possibly live up to.
