It's quite easy. But in the time it took you to post, you could have found the answer.
Not being able to find it is one thing. Admitting you're too lazy to look for the solution is quite another. Quite cheeky.

I didn't realize there are any special steps one must take to run their external display with the lid closed.

have the monitor plugged in, with the powerbook asleep and lid closed. Click your EXTERNAL mouse or keyboard to wake it up.

Heres a pic of my new setup.
Just got a 12" Rev D last Wed. Love it so far (First Mac)
Along with it I got a bluetooh mx900 Duo for my PC and I take the mouse with me when I goto work/class (for the powerbook). PC is running Windows, and is a decent P4.

How do you do this sharing?
Do you have a DVI switch?

I have a switch box which takes DVI cables from my PB and PC and has an ADC output which goes to the monitor.
My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the USB on the monitor, so they go with whichever computer is controlling the monitor. This is also done through the box, which has separate USB cables to both computers.
So in short, I have DVI and USB cables running from each computer to the box, and then the ADC from the monitor plugs into the box, and the monitor and any USB devices hooked up to it are shared between both computers.
It's very cool.

scribbler, if that is a 2405 did you have to send any back because of backlighting problems? I bought a 2005fp and had to send it back because of terrible backlighting problems, and have been gunshy every since. Too bad because I only paid $559.

Nice set up but I noticed that you have the dreaded "white spots" on your Powerbook. Apple has addressed this issue and is replacing customer screens. You should get your screen replaced.

Heres my fun filled Powerbook setup.
My 12in Powerbook, rev C. 768 RAM, Superdrive, 80 GIG HD. Logitech Mx 800 BT mouse, iPod Rev b 10 GIG, an external 250 GIG HD, and iSight, and my BT Headset. Plus a bunch of random toys.
The two blue and whites are mine. One is a webserver, one is a file server with about a terabyte of space on it. Plus my favorite: the Mac Classic II clock.

Thank you, I just shot a couple Polaroids and put them together. I know, it's old school but a pro calibar digital kit would break the bank. You know, Canon 1D, 24-70, 70-200, memory cards, blah, blah, blah...

I just think the photo embodies how so many people use their computers, where it's something they use everyday, but more than anything it's a tool that we have, not something that occupies every minute of our lives.

Cheaper and easier with an old school G4 or G3. Lots of space and PCI slots.

So I've had my powerbook for a year now, but just got a 20" cinema display a week ago (wanted the 23" but I'm a poor college student). Here are pics of my latest setup. In the first is a pic with my old ibook and my gf 12in powerbook. The next two are of just my powerbook w/ cinema display. Also pictured is my SE T637, ipod Shuffle (1GB) and my 3G 30GB iPod.
BTW...thats me in the center being "pushed" into Niagara Falls.

Double dipping as posted this in the mini forum as well. Anyway, here's my first shot with my new Mini (my beloved PB17 is off to the side on an iCurve). The desk is very cramped but it'll do till I move later this year, then I'll get a larger desk and tame some of the wild wires in the background as well as giving my 17 equal play.
Mini.
