This is a problem that continues to haunt me.

If one needs to connect a DVI-equipped Mac to an HDTV with VGA, you have to use a DVI-to-VGA adapter on the Mac's end. The problem though is that once you do this, the Mac no longer recognizes the HDTV as a 16:9 display, and only supplies resolution choices of the 4:3 or 16:10 flavor. The result is a squashed or stretched picture, because the Mac doesn't give the option for any of the proper 16:9 ratio resolutions. My question is, what's the solution? Pretend that HDMI to DVI is not an option (because for some tvs, it isn't).

Thanks All.

SwitchResX: complete control over your monitor will let you pick an arbitrary resolution.

If the TV is HD, you will have far better options than VGA. My Sony HDTV has HDMI and DVI, as well as component and s-video. All of which I'd pick over VGA.

There are older HDTVs with only component which is easy to convert to VGA.
