let me first say that I LOVE MY iPHONE and I need help to keep it. Let me explain. I live in an area that does not get ATT service. I was able to get the iPhone by using my parents address. I fully understand that if I use the phone for 3 months and 50% of my usage is in an "extended" area, then they will terminate my phone. That sucks. I really want to keep my phone and use it in this "no usable" area. Anyone have any suggestions or am I screwed. Maybe something I could tell them or another plan I could get on --I am desperate and will try anything. HELP

...what?

why would you want the iPhone if you don't get AT&T service where you live? How do you use it?

My only advice would be to hack it and use T-mobile?

It works perfectly --actually it works better than the Verizon phones in the area. The extended network give us full service here (look it up if your confused), I have a bunch of friends that have moved here (upstate NY) and brought there cingular phones here and they work fine, just like my iPhone, but the word out there is that after a few months they will catch on and axe me.

So if you're roaming and yet getting great service with a GSM provider -- you might want to figure out who that provider is, then unlock the iPhone and use it with them.

Thats what absolutely blows for me. I want an iPhone, but there'd be no point. I'm not even in the extended partner area!

I am not sure which GSM carrier I use, but I would sure like to see if we could figure this out. I am in 12946 (lake placid) NY and my previous service here was Verizon, BUT For some reason I thought I heard someone say that we use US cellular towers? Any thoughts

There is only two GSM carriers in the US, unless you are close enough to roam in Canada (don't know from you zip how far north you are). So your only option if AT&T drops you is unlocking your iPhone for T-Mobile

WirelessAdvisor lists the GSM providers for your zip code as being AT&T, T-Mobile, and Unicel.

, Wireless Phone and Cellphone Services

Note that it lists Unicel as being AMPS, but this is incorrect because Unicel is a GSM provider. Now it's possible that the carrier you're roaming on could be T-Mobile, but since Unicel holds the 850 MHz license and 850 MHz tends to carry much farther than 1900, if your coverage is good and you live in a rural area, my money would be on your roaming provider being Unicel.

The bad news is that Verizon is buying Unicel, and is going to convert their GSM network to CDMA, so there's a good chance that that GSM coverage you're seeing will go away eventually. So you should check out T-Mobile's coverage viewer to see what they are like in your area:

T-Mobile Personal Coverage Check

Otherwise, you might eventually have to eBay the iPhone.

I check the t-mobile site and was curious since you seem to WAYYYYYYY more than I do, could you check the 12946 zip code and let me know what you think I should do. i will try and do the t-mobile unlock if you think that the verizon BUY OVER is going to take a long time. I think I am going to get dropped in a few months. I love this phone and it sucks that I might have to sell it when it works so well.

Um, that's what I did. The first link I posted was the list of carriers available in your zip code.

If you are asking me to look at the coverage map for you, I'm afraid I can't do that. I don't know where you live, where you work, where you do all the other things you need to do, and what routes you take to go to all those places. Only you know those things, so you should enter your address into the T-Mobile coverage viewer and see if things look acceptable to you around there.

they do look acceptable --but I do not want to go through all the changes if you feel that I am going to be dropped anyway (ie. Unicell being bought by verizon ) would drop service in my area. It doesnt look good for me and my iPhone. thanks for the input -kinda

Well, Verizon is claiming at the moment that they'll keep the GSM network up for roaming purposes... but you know how it is. I'm not to comfortable with it.

Does the coverage on the T-Mobile coverage viewer show up as native coverage or as partner coverage? If it's native, you have nothing to worry about.

That's not true. Montana has neither, but instead uses a small company called Chinook Wireless for GSM coverage. AT&T and T-mobile use Chinook's towers for roaming.

Yeah... the thing is that statement probably will be true before long, the way the small GSM providers are all getting gobbled up by the big telcos lately - Dobson by AT&T, Unicel by Verizon, SunCom by T-Mobile...
