Today i spoke with apple over the phone, and the reason the delay on the powerbook's is due to the 5400rpm hard drives. Dont take it as truth, just as a plausible explanation.

5400 drive is not worth the money, heat, or battery usage.

You did the right thing. I have tried PB's with both the drives and found zero difference.

I am not talking about x bench scores cause that hardly takes in to account real life.

Im talking about normal disk copying, and app loading.

I don't agree. The reviews and tests of the 5400rpm drive show that it has negligible impact on heat and battery drain. The 5400rpm drive has extra power-saving features not found on the 4200rpm drive. The extra bandwidth that the 5400rpm drive affords may not be of any benefit to you, but those of us who are dealing with large media files - extra bandwidth from the drive means more simultenous tracks in FCP or MOTU for example. I regularly transfer files in the tens of gigabytes range and I can tell you from experience that a 5400rpm drive finishes the task faster than the stock 4200 rpm drive. But for those that do not need the extra boost (which is not huge) the 4200 drive should be great, especially when it means that you get your powerbook faster - and we all need a little bit of that right now.

If you really need speed people should get the 7K60 drive which is 7200rpm (like in your desktop). There are 2 reasons I did not go with this:

1. voids warranty
2. only 60GB

Overall for me the 5400rpm drive was in the sweet-spot.... fast and large!

And don't forget that the hitachi 5400rpm drive has 8mb cache vs. the 2mb.

I'm VERY happy with my 5400rpm drive.

I went with the 7200 rpm drive and kept my stock 80gb handy for backup and "Just-in-case" reasons.

This machine SCREAMS!! In general photoshop applications, it is almost as fast as my co-workers dual 1.25 G4 tower!!!

Most will be satisfied with a porche and don't need the indy car I need...

So if that's the case the stock PB15 at 1Ghz comes with a 4200RPM. Did they explain the delay as well? Apparently i've been waiting for more than a month now and i still have no news about my pb's whereabouts. So Sad.

I'm guessing that the delay is the screens and not the HD.

Sent in Oct 16, received Nov 3. I just got it out of the box, and I am looking at the spots- I do not see any now! Lid latch work! Wow. I am a happy camper! Hope they fix yours too!
