I'm wondering if I have an addon causing this?
When I open safari for the first time the window is not selected by default. I cannot just hit command-L and type an address, I first have to click in the window. This seems strange if opening Safari is the only action I've taken.
Anyone else notice this?

I've noticed this with Firefox since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. This appears to be due to some issue with Growl. I haven't seen the issue with Safari though.

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Yonkers can have better TV reception.

Well, good to know I'm not the only one with this problem.
I tried disabling growl, deleting my pref file, and resetting Safari. No luck yet.
Guess I'll submit a bug report, and hope for some help.

Actually you were right GH. I brought up the console window before opening Safari, and even though I had safarigrowl unchecked it was still launching.
Completely disabling growl solved my problem.

Have you tried using ⌘+Tab to select the apps "Safari" to see if this works?

Selecting the app always brings it to front/gives it focus. The problem is that Growl gets in the way somehow-perhaps it's not able under Snow Leopard to properly work in the background when working with a browser. But disabling Growl works for both Safari and Firefox, and probably will for other browsers that Growl interfaces with as well.
Supposedly there's a new version of Growl out or on the way out that works properly with SL and all browsers; I haven't had a chance to look for it yet.
