These thingies...

Encountered one last night. If anyone's not familiar, they force you to put all smart devices inside, seal it up, and make everyone wonder what ****in time it is all night, or whether the babysitter lit the house on fire.

I get why they're doing it, but I still found it pretty annoying. Especially because it forced me to occupy myself before the show by talking to humans.

Show was Chris Rock BTW, and he was sadly kinda meh. Hannibal Buress opened for him and killed. Total surprise he was there, he's not getting billing.

These spread from a few Improv places and clubs in San Francisco to, seemingly, a ton of universities, clubs,, theaters etcetera in the past 3-4 years. Very interesting times.

Interesting. I assumed the main point was to stop video piracy, but this sounds more like anti-annoyance strategy.

It makes sense it would be wanted for that, but I assumed no one would want to foot the bill unless there was demonstrable financial loss occurring.

I put my phone on vibrate and don't text, but I want to sneak a look every now and then at how much longer I have to endure this piece of shit I'm watching.

Luckily, the combo of me intentionally seeing movies late in their run, and the closest theatre being one with the giant recliners, people are either committed enough not to text, or I don't see them doing it.

We went to the Doobie Brothers/Journey concert earlier this year at "Ak Chin Pavilion" While they did not employ the use of YONDR bags, we did notice that while we could make a phone call, there was no internet connection. I checked with several people who had different service providers and they all said they had no internet. There is no wifi there as well. My speculation is this was due to Facebook Live, Periscope, and other broadcast apps. They don't want people streaming the show on FB. That didn't prevent me from recording video and posting it later.

My guess is Mr Rock didn't want anything showing up on FB or YouTube. George Lopez was recorded throwing out a women who took exception to something he said during a Phoenix show.

That may have been network overload.

The potential for "viral damage" is a good point. That makes more sense than being worried about bootlegs.

Especially if they tee-off on Trump.

Four different networks at the same time?
I'm on Verizon. I also check with an AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile user.

It's theoretically possible. I know convention centers often only have a network capable of "everyday" traffic, and if there's actually a convention, they have to pull in mobile towers.

Though, yeah, they may have just switched off data.

No way in hell I'd ever submit to something like this. You want me to be out of reach if one of my kids was in an emergency or if my home alarm went off just because of your show?

I think sealing up your phone while you're at some sort of event is a bit extreme. The last concert I went to was both at a venue I'd never been to, and one of my favorite performers. I took pictures of the stage and the rest of the auditorium from my seat, and a few pictures of the performance.

Honestly I was enjoying the performance too much to think about recording it. But I also hate it when others interrupt what I'm attending with their phone conversations and texts, so I always silence my phone and pay attention to the event I paid money to see.

Oh, and I've been wearing a wristwatch for so long that I kind of feel naked without one, so I don't depend on my phone for the time. But I do see how some people depend on them and how disconcerting it is to have the phone inaccessible for even checking the time.

Do phones register on metal detector wands? If they don't, it wouldn't have been too hard to smuggle one in. In this situation, handing it over to a female with a pocket would have been best, because the wand guys were guys, and not giving women pat-downs.

The only thing would be to make sure no one sees it with the screen lit. That's going to stick out like a sore thumb.

I saw a few smartwatches light up, but no confiscations.

Are they going to have to make a mitten version of this bag for the LTE Apple Watch?
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I think they are more worried about video that calls interrupting the show.

Yeah, and assholes that think recording a live show on your cellphone is a good idea. Enjoy the show. Your crappy vertical video can't actually see the performers at all and the audio is terrible. Is it really that important to get six likes from your dumb Facebook friends?

At this show they were asking you to put both phone and watch in the bag.

I know it seems to make it go off in an airport but who know with a handheld detector. I remember seeing Dave Chappelle in Nashville. They didn't confiscate phones but the venue made it abundantly clear that any recording would not be tolerated. So they said if they saw you with your phone out you would be escorted out with no refund. No exceptions. I had no issue with that. Because if something came up my phone would have still vibrated to alert me and I could have went outside the performance area to see what was going on. But taking my phone and locking it up out of my control? Never going to happen.
