dual -
1. of grammatical number : denoting reference to two
2. consisting of two parts or elements or having two like parts

duel -
1. a combat between two persons; specif: a formal combat with weapons fought between two persons in the presence of witnesses
2. a conflict between antagonistic persons, ideas, or forces; also: a hard-fought contest between two opponents

Both definitions from Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition

I don't want to see powermacs duel. So let's make sure we are using duals.

This is a sticky post because dual-duel is a silly grammatical mistake, and Apple users shouldn't be seen to be making mistakes that were ironed out in primary school.
Cheers,
Nick.

Since loosing means "To cast loose; detach" -- I guess that's apt (although it's in the physical sense -- loosing a backpack, for example). Might get messy with your mind though, since your head might go with it.

I see two possible reasons:

1.) Our beloved mod Scott, our little king, is trying himself as Mussolini of the English language. After pissing off a guy in another thread for a minor typo "PowerBok" (sic) he decided he will give it another try. Therefore, he has decided to abuse stickiness.

2.) We Americans happen to be a rather silly people. We prefer giving the richest 5% a tax cut than sending our kids to decent schools. One of the consequences is that illiteracy is escalating among Americans. Scott, our beloved mod is trying to do his fair share in the combat against the sneaking estrepement.

Heh, perhaps you should concentrate on "your" versus "you're" or "to" versus "too" versus "two" or something a little more universally applicable first...

And yet with the amount of jerks in these forums there hasn't been a web etiquette sticky?

Seems etiquette and showing respect toward others is a tad more important than the spelling of our English language when a good portion here speak it as their 2nd, 3rd maybe even forth language.

maybe even forth language
I remember Forth. I played with that after I spent some time with Basic, Fortran, and Algol. It was my "fourth" computer language.

While everyone is on a spelling soapbox, I cannot count the number of times I have seen lose (you lost something) spelled as loose (something became unsecure).

I appreciate the sentiment of this thread but I feel that it is a waste of time to try police the spelling of "dual" and an unwarranted use of administrative power to make a sticky about it. I respectfully submit that this thread should be "unstickied" or deleted.

Yes, please put an end to this madness. Everytime I see some post with somebody describing a mac as a Duel G4, I think, how in the world is this dumbass going to utilize their mac to the fullest.

Please educate all the illiterate people who do not know the difference between Duel and Dual.

Jeez. You'd think many people never made it past fourth grade.

Dual and Duel are simple ,four letter words. Can these people spell Cat or Dog correctly ?

Everybody makes spelling mistakes online, but Duel & Dual is no honest mistake, and there's plenty of people who need to brush up on simple grammar techniques.

People who misuse Duel & Dual are on my List, right after laggers, probably.

Great, how about a sticky explaining that a "Rev A" machine is actually a revision of an original. It can't be a revision unless it revises something. What people are calling Rev. A's is an original.

while i think you're technically correct about theoretical usage, i have a "rev. b" B&W G3, which is a revision of the original B&W G3 (the "rev. a"). if you told me i had a "rev. a," you'd be hindering rather than helping me. the same is true of the original iMacs. it's a naming scheme that's already in practice, so we can't really do anything about it now.

This sticky is more annoying than the duel/dual mixup.

Just to push some buttons, I'm going to use duel until this thread is unstickified. Get a real cause already!

I think this thread is hilarious. To the people who are learning proper english...great! To the people who are actually getting pissed off by it... well, I just don't know what to say! Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

p.s. colour and centre ARE the correct spellings of those words in MANY, MANY countries.

God forbid if Apple ever introduces a Quad processor G5.

I wonder if the illiterates will be able to count to four.

On a positive note, I can't think of any single word offhand that these people could possibly mix up with Quad.
