Not to beat a horse, but we really haven't heard much regarding this, yet.

For those of you with the new PB, is it (A) too hot for your lap and (B) distractingly noisy?

For those of you who have experience with the 667 & 800 models, does the new model fare any better in A or B? Or are they about the same?

THANK YOU for your participation in this survey!

It will take a couple of days to answer this question with certainty. Will report back comparing a PBG4/800 to a PBG4/1GHZ.

They are not bad at all. It never gets hot enough that it is uncomforatble on the bare leg. The fan is on quite a bit, but it is not particularly loud. I'm not sure how loud the older machines were, but i would not consider this to be loud. It has to be pretty quiet, and kinda have to be listening for it.

Exactly the same opinion here.

Yeah, please post this! I'd be especially interested in the noise comparison. My Ti800 is purring quite loudly, and I find tasks such as scrolling to be sometimes mildly distracting. If the new 1GHz TiBook was really silent, I'd probably get one.

TIA!

Heat seems cooler than 800DVI which is probably because the 1GHZ fan is ALWAYS ON unlike the 800.

The 800 therefore is much quieter in overall use because it doesn't run the fan too much.

I agree...my 1 Ghz Combo fan is almost always on even with mild normal usage. However, the bottom of the case is darn right cool most of the time. Far cooler than a Ti 400 without a fan on after a long time of normal use. Even the power button region on the Ghz, classically a "hot spot" on Ti's, remains barely even warm. Haven't had a chance to see how fan works with just battery usage...

Personally, I would prefer a bit more of a case warm up before kicking on the fan. Silence, after all, is golden...

Are you talking about Quartz Extreme's use of your graphics card in scrolling? If so, I'll check for you when I get my TiBook. I think Apple's dealt with the noisy video issue with scrolling on the latest iteration of TiBook.

That would be cool.
Now if only the fan wouldn't need to be running almost all the time on the 1GHz TiBook...
(I like my computers to be really silent.)

Anyway, can anyone confirm the strange noises generating from under the keyboard are gone? Thanks.

My 1Ghz is much quieter than my 800mhz. Less scrolling noises, less clicking and humming, and the fan's low setting is more soothing and has less whine. It's a very nice machine.

Now if only mine shipped today...

I won't know until I get home, and by then, Apple will be closed. If it's not going to ship this week, I'd like to know so I can refuse shipment and buy one from the Apple Store in Westfield Mall.

I didn't get the expedited shipping because I figured something like this would happen.

Hey Mister! You probably just cost me $3000 (and some grief with the girlfriend, and some with the accountant as well).

Thanks!

I wonder if I'll still be able to know just by listening to the humming of my 'Book whether Fireworks is running or not. I can with my Ti800!

That's what I am here for.

I am using my T-1000 at the Starbucks, wirelessly surfing Chimera, using Entourage, uploading to my site with Fetch with iTunes going and it is supersmooth, and when on battery there is no fan, as well.

Also, one more thing--the weird, loud sound the combo drives make whenever you boot the machine? Gone, at least with the SuperDrive ones. Not worth buying a new machine over, but I never liked that weird noise.

My T-800 does make some weird noises, and not only on startup, but also with english-speaking items. Guess I'll have to get something similar to your T-1000 after all, even if all the fan usage may result in it being too cold for comfort.

Eeks! You're using entourage and fetch at a public hotspot? Are you tunneling via ssh? If not the rest of the world is probably reading your email, sending spam through your account, and creating a porn distribution center on your website.

You might want to change your passwords.

Holy God, the fan is LOUD!

I'm coming from an iBook. I just got the Ti today, and haven't really used them at all. I'm just sitting there merrily working, getting things set up, wondering to myself about all this talk of the fan. Everyone has been saying they really have to lean in to hear the fan running. And then...whammo! The secondary(?) fan kicks in. This is running on battery power but using settings for the power adaptor.

There is no need to lean in to hear the fan, unless you've been to one too many Stryper concerts (I think one is sufficient). I can hear it from ten feet away. Granted the machine is ultracool.

( whew, it just shut off, what a relief )

I've used a Ti667 VGA for over a year. I have only spent 8 hours or so on my new 1Ghz/1GB/SD 'book and I can confirm that the new 'book runs cooler than my 667 VGA. The fan in my 1Gig runs alot - similar to my 667 - but the fan in the 1gig 'book is noticeably quieter than the 667 fan. Personally I don't think the fan is loud but it is noticeable and definitely not "hard to hear". Considering the increased horsepower it's amazing to me that the new 'book is both cooler and less noisy than my old 'book. No complaints here.

Here's my take on heat and noise:

They're both much worse when plugged in. No surprise there. After being plugged and sitting on the desk for a while, the bottom of the PB is quite warm. However, the top has yet to really heat up. Also, the fan comes on much more often when plugged in. Even the Engery Saver features can't explain all of this, b/c when draining the battery for the first time, I wanted it to happen quickly, so I turned everything on full blast to drain power faster. Still the fan only came on once, at that was low!

While on batteries, the fan rarely if ever comes on except when using the optical drive, and the heat is not a big deal. However, when operating in silent mode in a quiet room, the little buzzing noise while scrolling is kind of irritating. Anyone know why this happens or how to stop it? I suppose if that's my only complaint, I'm doing OK!

This has been cited several times as an annoying feature of the new PB. Numerous posts have indicated that it is "resonance" in the graphics card when portions of the screen are redrawn, such as occurs during scrolling.

I have to admit that overall, I'm very pleased with my Ghz Combo on all aspects. Heat has yet to be an issue and the fan is very, very quiet when plugged in. Rarely on otherwise...

My TiBook 1Ghz SD doesn't get that hot. I left it on all day, doing web surfing playing audio CD's etc, and the bottom of my TiBook hardly got really hot. It was warm to the touch, but nothing that would make you flinch your hand away.

In terms of the noise. I am quite surprised with the quiet noise level of the TiBook. The fan starts to kick in when I start doing heavy stuff, and that is noticeably loud, although not too bad. I think there are two fans? Not sure about that. I guess I am used to my Athlon desktop that has 5 fans and was really loud. I just recently replaced the case fans with quieter ones and it is dead silent now. I wonder if we can do this with our TiBooks? Although, I'm not sure if it would require some delicate handling of the Tibooks interior.

The heat doesn't bother me, nor does the noise. I hardly notice either, until I start reading threads like this one

I know I should be really, really concerned, but somehow I can't bring myself to get that worked up.

I do agree that in time, this will be a major concern--but I have to say that once i start hearing actual, real live cases of this happening on the T-Mobile Hot Spot system, I will begin tunneling. I just don't think the *******s who do this **** have adapted yet, and I guess I'm taking that chance. Wooo! Life on the edge!
