i just got a brand new albook 15 w/ superdrive and it's a speedy little machine even with just the 512 stick of ram it came with but for some reason aol instant messenger is incredibly slow. even the simplest task like typing into an im box makes the beachball spin. its not my internet connection because all websites load incredibly fast, it just seems to be aim. has anyone else had problems like these? it's really getting on my nerves.

You might want to try iChat or some other AIM compatible client.

Give iChat or Adium a try. I know the AOL IM client for OS X is really, really crappy.

i just figured it out! i had installed about 4 thousand fonts on my machine but never deactivated them in suitcase. thats what was causing all the lag. i actually figured it out when i went to use microsoft word and it wouldnt even open because it was so bogged down with all the fonts. anyway, we're back up rockin' and rollin'
