I want to max out the RAM on my new MBP, so I need a 1-GB SO-DIMM + a 2-GB SO-DIMM, but am I correct in my understanding that Apple isn't selling the 2-GB SO-DIMM? I just visited the online Apple store and noticed that they offer only two memory choices:

Apple Memory Module 1GB 667MHz DDR2 (PC2-5300) 1x1GB SO-DIMM

Apple Memory Module 2GB 667MHz DDR2 (PC2-5300) 2x1GB SO-DIMMs

TIA

It comes with 2GB and maxes at 3GB, correct? I ASSume it has only one more slot for the additional (1GB) RAM. That's odd that they sell a 2GB...

i think the OEM Samsung 2GB modules are cheaper elsewhere than at Apple...@ OWC.

Oh! it's only a little bit.

C2D MBPs have 2 ram slots, so the 3 gb is 1x1gb and 1x2gb. Apple's price on the ram isn't that bad for once. I ordered my MBP with 3gb and figured I was paying a bit for the convienience of having it installed for me

My question still remains: does Apple sell the 2-GB SO-DIMM? When I went to the Apple store I couldn't find the 2-GB DIMM for sale. Since one can buy a new MBP w/3-GB, I assumed one could purchase the 2-GB DIMM directly from Apple as a separate item.

Thanks for the OWC link.

Certainly does not look like the 2gb are available as individual items. Maybe they will be once everyone's MBP has shipped and the supply chain catches up with demand the 2gb sticks might show up in the store.

OK, so... I would also like to buy a 2GB stick for my MBP C2D, however, there's no way I'm paying $620 for it, that is ridiculously insane. I have previously bought 1 GB for my old PowerBook from a generic reseller for around $90 and it came with lifetime warranty and I did not have a single problem with it.

I have found this 2GB stick for $273 from a company called Add-On Computer (ACP), and their website claims that it comes with a lifetime warranty as well (they seem to only sell through resellers). You can find a bunch of cheap ones here.

So, has anyone bought this? And more importantly: anyone know what the difference is between this, this, and this is? They're all the same price, but they have different part numbers.

Edit: I was wrong, those links above actually link to 2GB kits (of 2x 1GB sticks).

Did you look in the compatibility tabs for each of those products? One of them lists the Intel Mac mini as being compatible..... I'd order that one.
iMac 3.3/i5 (2015) 24GB 2TB 10.13.1
MBP 15/2.5 (2014) 16GB 500GB 10.13.1
MBP 15/2.3 (2012) 16GB 250GB 10.13.1
MB 13/2.4 (2010) 9GB 120GB 10.13.1
MB 13/2.0 (E-2009) 4GB 120GB 10.13

Although I'd like it to, I doubt 2gig sticks will come down to like $200-$250 (Which is where it becomes almost-affordable) anytime soon.

Have you noticed any significant difference compared to 2GB total? I heard people say the new MBP's should have matched sticks in order to get full performance.

I think matched RAM performance is only noticeable with an integrated video card rather than machines like the MBP.

Yeah, it seems that that's the cheapest you can currently buy.

I think I'll just go with a 1GB stick... 2GB isn't bad either. Having lots of RAM is essential for a laptop though, it increases the life-span of the hard drive and makes everything snappy™.

MBP comes with 2GB by default. so 2GB it is, unless you pitch one of the 1GBs from apple and pony up for the 2GB, now or later.

Finally pulled myself out of the lab.

Yes I do notice a performance improvement, especially when I have many apps open. No I haven't quantified it, but rather just a subjective observation. I also wanted the extra ram so that I could allocate 1 GB to Parallels. (And I also believe that Parallels is snappier due to less paging now that I've given it the add'l memory.)

Yeah it an expense, but since I use my personal computer for work, I got work to spring for the 2-GB DIMM...which made it a no-brainer
