Its about time to discuss the crazy stuff happening with SONY.

I think their IT staff needs a good yelling at, and some dismissals.
I think the North Koreans are behind it, which suggests their threats are blowhard BS.
The SONY management and the 'talent' aspect is fine entertainment. Hypocrites all.

Courtesy of the leaked Sony emails, it seems they've been indirectly bribing encouraging state attorneys general to attack Google. TechDirt story, based on NY Times story. Or their leaked plans to bring SOPA-style site blocking to the US through legal backdoors.

There's also the leaked security report from a year ago, where an outside audit found multiple vulnerabilities. Like passwords stored in plaintext, and routers not subject to security checks. Sony did nothing with the audit results.

Perhaps we should congratulate the hackers on a public service. It's been interesting to read about. And a lot of this is important to public policy.

You would think the PSN hack a few years prior would have encouraged them to tighten security across all of their divisions.

I don't buy that, that sounds as if it had been taken straight out of a (leaked) movie plot. It seems too sophisticated and the way the information is leaked doesn't really fit the narrative.

It's just a viral story to promote the movie. None of it is real

I guess they should run "Team America - World Police" in its place....

Kim is an immature child dictator so I really don't put it past the N. Koreans.

I think I'm done with SONY products too. Such a bunch of stupid cowards.

IT warned the execs, the execs chose to do nothing. This has been a year in the making, nothing was done to prevent it because $

imo I think that China had a major hand in this, but we can't say jack about them because we need each other.

China is my thought, too. They don't want NK to fall, so they'll do favors which help prop up the government.

SONY Not doing anything with the IT Security review but stuffing in a drawer someplace is THEIR FAULT, and I'm glad they have egg on their collective faces, but NK damaged SONY so what will Japan do? Probably nothing. This has really tainted my view of SONY. I'll probably never buy a SONY product again, and I have a bunch.

I still think NK is behind this and Kim Jong Un, the chubby immature wack-job dictator is behind the NK hacking.

I think I'll watch Team America-World Police tonight.

I used to be a big Sony whore, but that ended in the early aughts. I stay well away now. Too overpriced.

That said, I got a 17" field monitor yesterday, and Sony was my only real option.

It's "holy shit" overpriced, but pretty freakin adorbs.

They made some great stuff - just ditched my 36" HD Tube TV, worked great but alas 200 watts vs 65" & low wattage...

anyhoo, just heard that an Austin theater ditched the new movie but is replacing it with Team America FTW.

I'm still using my Digital 8 Video camera I bought in 1999. I pitched my thousand pound 32" Glass ball Sony TV in 2006. It took me and a buddy about 10 minutes to haul it out to the curb. It was gone in 20 minutes. I do wish SONY would sell the movie on line so we could laugh about Kim at home.

Anything that does harm to Sony is well done IMO, so hats off to the Hackers - whoever they may be.

(the threats of harm are a bit over the top though, and I do not condone that)

This is what I was thinking. Get it to go viral, everywhere, and deny them the power.

Team America play is also good.

Surely the logical conclusions to draw regarding Sony and Paramount pulling showings are:

Sony still has some leaked data that hasn't been posted and its even more damaging than what has been;
Paramount has some email conversations in the archive that are at least as bad as the ones leaked from Sony;
Last I looked Paramount belonged to Viacom which belonged in some significant part to Roseanne Barr. I bet she doesn't mince words when it comes to Hollywood stars.

On a completely different note (other than it being hack-related), did anyone see the threats Anonymous mad against Iggy Azalea? I'm not convinced it was them, it didn't really sound or feel like their kind of deal.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I agree. There's usually something both sly and surreal about their operations. This is just extortion... boring.

I should add, Iggy seems like an idiot, whereas "212" is fantastically disgusting. Highly recommended. Buy it.

So, now N. Korea is having 'internet issues'......Huh! How about that.

Its because of all those who want to see a pirated copy of "The Interview" on-line in N.Korea....or maybe not.

Given Obama's press conference the other day it seems the US government is taking this a lot more seriously than the typical corporate hacking and is viewing it as a national security issue. I can't say if that's warranted or not. But it would seem a pretty strong message has been sent.

This kind of response is too obvious, and perhaps a 3rd party is actually the ones doing this. Just what we need for the Holidays, an attack on a nuke plant or some such.

Limited release to a few independent theaters in Austin and Atlanta. You have to remember that Sony doesn't own the theater chains and can't force them to show this movie. AMC, Regal, and Cinemark are the 3 largest theater chains in North America and they aren't touching it with a 10 foot pole. I wouldn't read too much into this.

From what I read Apple wasn't willing to make that decision on such a short timeframe, but I guess now they've have had the time they need to consider the implications and/or consult the appropriate internal resources.

Just watched it. Quite intemperate but definitely funny. Wouldn't have paid full price to see it in a theater but it was money well spent on a rental.
