The 5K Retina 27-inch iMacs updated yesterday can now support higher quantities of RAM than Apple currently supplies, it has been revealed. The refreshed high-resolution Macs now include four memory slots, allowing it to use up to 64GB of RAM by filling the iMac up with four 16GB RAM modules, double what the previous models were able to accept, and also twice as much as Apple itself offers via its online store when performed as an aftermarket upgrade.

Discovered by Other World Computing, the retailer is already preparing to capitalize by offering higher-capacity RAM upgrade kits. Going on sale later today, the company will offer single 16GB modules for $330, a 32GB kit using two 16GB modules for $600, a 48GB kit with two each of 16GB and 8GB modules for $730, and a 64GB kit of four 16GB modules for $1,200.

While the 27-inch iMacs will be upgradeable, the same cannot be said for the 4K 21.5-inch version. Confirming what was announced yesterday by Apple, an OWC teardown of the slightly smaller 4K iMac shows the memory is soldered onto the board and is not upgradeable. Buyers of the 4K 21.5-inch iMac therefore need to upgrade the RAM at the time of purchase, with the current options being either 8GB or 16GB.
