Being gassed to death is probably fairly enjoyable in comparison to be hunted down by a cat then toyed with before being eaten alive.

I concur that being gassed to death is probably better than being pawed to death. Thing is, this isn't the most humane thing out there (like it says in the story), as there's traps available which don't kill 'em.

The most humane trap would have little wheels on the bottom and would drive the mouse right to your annoying neighbors house.

Inside the trap, there would be a tiny mouse martini dispenser and a tiny TV showing Tom and Jerry cartoons. You know, to keep the little guy happy during the trip.

Our cat is an indoor cat, so her killer instincts have only been honed so far as to hunt down and capture dishrags then attempt to drown them in the toilet.

Ahhh, that'd explain it then. After 16-odd years of living on a farm with 6 indoor/outdoor cats, I've never ever seen one eat its prey live. Ever.

Yeah, my only experience with cats hunting is the Discovery channel. Lions definitely eat their prey alive.

The dishrag hunting was only funny for about the first 5 times I had to throw a sodden rag in the laundry and refill her water dish. It's even less funny now that she's discovered the toilet...

Although actually, she was born a barn cat too. But she was the runt and a little sickly so was taken indoors where she's stayed ever since (after first moving from rural Illinois to Boston).

I hear ya. What tends to happen is that the mouse dies whilst being played with and they're eaten shortly afterwards unless there's a competition on. When there's a competition on, they end up in separate piles so the cats can keep score.

I get the idea that maybe the cats don't actually want to kill for food, since they're pretty well stocked with the stuff I feed 'em, but rather they're just playing and if the mouse dies they figure "what the hey, Mickey is dead so why waste?". Walked out one morning and there's two of the cats sitting next to an unharmed live mouse - it's just sitting there not bothered at all, like it was passing the time of day with 'em.

Ugh tell me about it. Our cat brings home a mouse plays with it for half an hour, loses the mouse, walks around depressed because he can't find the mouse and goes to sleep. Just to wake up the next morning still depressed about the lost mouse (which is now rotting in some corner of the house because it was fatally wounded).

I'm not sure what a tilt trap is, but most mousetraps I've seen severely injure and cripple the mouse. Killing it gently is probably more humane than making it suffer and turning it into easy prey.

those "keep them alive" traps are illegal here. people used them too much, put the mice on the streets, we have a problem with too many mice on the streets (at night you see tens)

i used a live trap too , but it filled up so quickly it became a second job clearing them, and the mice always kept coming back. so it's back to the old snapper from then.
