[Updated with news of membership extensions] Apple's Developer Center portal is in the middle of an extended maintenance outage, visitors note. Word of the downtime first emerged on Thursday; unusually, however, the Center is still closed as of mid-afternoon Eastern time on Friday. "This site is undergoing maintenance for an extended period today. Thanks for your patience," the website's placeholder message
reads. A new more extended message has appeared on the site, assuring developers that any memberships that were near expiration will be automatically extended beyond the downtime.
For developers the portal is an extremely important resource, offering up not only documentation but essential files. At the moment that includes betas of OS X Mavericks, iOS 7, and Xcode 5, all products scheduled to ship to the public sometime this fall. As the wait has dragged on, Apple has changed the message on the site to add that the maintenance "is taking longer than expected." The site is still down as of 9:30PM ET.
