I've had a search of the topics, and I couldn't find this question answered, so I apologise if this has been asked before.

Here's my question:

I'm going to get a macbook w/Leopard, and I have an external HDD (250 GB), but, will I be able to use time machine? Obviously, I'm not going to have the HDD plugged in all the time, so, will that mean I can't use it, or is there something I'm missing, as whenever I've seen a demo of time machine, the HDD has always been plugged in constantly?

Thanks for the link. But, I read through it and I couldn't seem to find the answer to my question. So, what do I need to do to keep Time Machine up-to-date for my macbook, even if it isn't connected 24-7?

It'll update as soon as you connect your external harddrive.

Be sure to treat TM backup with respect when shutting down your MacBook. If TM is actively backing up when you select shutdown a warning message will pop up asking if you want to quit the shutdown and let backup complete or to shutdown immediately. You can select either. If you interrupt the backup with the shutdown then when you startup next time with the ext HD connected, TM will fire up and resume (if it can) from where it was interrupted.

My suggestion is to allow TM backups to complete rather than interrupting them.

Good luck.

I'm excited about this feature. I have airport extreme at home, so I was planning on using it at school to do wireless backups...but I ended up leaving that at home for my parents, so now I have to plug it in. Glad to see it works "the apple way" and can backup on YOUR schedule, not say "IT'S 5:00 ON SUNDAY! TIME TO BACKUP"... it just does it whenever you plug in your external.

Along these same lines, if someone has a new airport at home where you can plug in a hard drive to create a network hard drive, can time machine wirelessly backup your data? Can a large enough hard drive be partitioned to backup a couple of macs??

Others have mentioned that it works with network storage.

... but not AirDisk (not yet anyway!)

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I have a different TimeMachine on a MacBook question for anyone who has tried it.

Does the space background in TimeMachine move around on a MacBook? A friend of mine had the first beta on his MacBook and I tried it for a few minutes. For some reason I don't think the space scene background was moving around.
Would this be the fault of the not-too-great graphics card, or does the background indeed move and I need to visit an optometrist?

The space background moves. Stars etc fly out of the screen toward you and to your right and left.
