Hi everyone-

I have a wonderful dual 2.0 G5 that I've had a year or so.

I've just installed 2 gigs of new RAM, in 4x 512MB strips...

Since installing this, I've had two Kernel Panics in two days!

I'd NEVER had one before and it's scary.

Both times I've just been surfing the internet... so I haven't lost any work... yet...

I'm really worried about this. All the RAM checks as 'OK' in system profiler, and it's all fitted correctly.

DIMM0/J11:

Speed: PC3200U-30330

DIMM1/J12:

Size: 512 MB
Type: DDR SDRAM
Speed: PC3200U-30330
Status: OK

DIMM2/J13:

Size: 512 MB
Type: DDR SDRAM
Speed: PC3200U-30330
Status: OK

DIMM3/J14:

Size: 512 MB
Type: DDR SDRAM
Speed: PC3200U-30330
Status: OK

DIMM4/J41:

Size: 256 MB
Type: DDR SDRAM
Speed: PC3200U-30330
Status: OK

DIMM5/J42:

Size: 256 MB
Type: DDR SDRAM
Speed: PC3200U-30330
Status: OK

DIMM6/J43:

Size: 512 MB
Type: DDR SDRAM
Speed: PC3200U-30330
Status: OK

DIMM7/J44:

Size: 512 MB
Type: DDR SDRAM
Speed: PC3200U-30330
Status: OK

IS there anything else I could be doing wrong?

any feedback greatly appreciated!

Take the RAM out? Kernel Panics? No? Its the RAM.

Take it out and see if you still get the panics. If not then its the RAM. Send it back and have it replaced. - try taking one 512 stick out at a time. Narrow it down to a specific stick.

As you have said tho - its most probably the RAM, and not a coincidence
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

Where did you get the ram? What brand? If it's not specifically guaranteed to work in Macs it often won't. I pay a few bucks more but I only use ram from Crucial. I've never had a ram related problem.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

To be 100% sure that the RAM is at fault (most likely, it is) get memtest and follow the instructions.

To be 100% sure, take out the ram and try running it. I had a problem that I thought was the RAM, but turned out to be known issue with head failures in hitachi drives.

Thanks to all for the help!

The kernel panics have been seemingly random, not immediate... I'm running the machine with all the ram now and it seems okay. I'm gonna try this memtest application and see what happens...

Later on I will try removing sticks.... although as I have to pair them there are lots of possible combinations.... and it could take a while to isolate the bad stick....

Thanks again for everyone taking the time to help me out

If you get a kernal panic with all the 3rd party ram out, it could be the harddrive. I know it sounds like I'm 'pushing' this as the problem, but it happened to me and I lost everything .

That sounds like my worst nightmare....

It panicked again, this time with fans blazing like crazy....

VERY scary...

Took two of the strips out, and replaced them with original strips...

will test like this for a while and see how it all goes...

I'll keep you guys posted!

If it is that intermittant, your best bet is to try loading up the memory.

Try running something like Handbrake to convert a DVD to mv4. When my memory modules failed, it died every time I tried to render video.

The way I figured it out was to remove all memory modules and go back to the basics. It SUCKED to run a Quad on virtual memory for almost a month.

Memtest or hardware test (even when running multiple/extensive tests) will not catch all errors, so look at their results with a grain of salt.
If there were no God, it would be necessary to invent him.

Sounds like what's happening to me - (listen to 2009059)

Also see my other thread on Apple Store repairs too. I had the same issues as you did and my computer is in the apple store with them diagnosing it as an HD failure. Fans blazing like crazy was what happened to me with the kernel panic.
