Found an old iPod dock from 2003 in my box of miscellaneous computer stuff.

The iPhone 4 fits nicely and it recharges.

Haven't tried the audio/video out but charging is good enough for me!

Take that Apple and your evil 'make them buy a separate dock' policy.

I have been using my 2004 iPod dock ever since, with all kinds of newer devices.

Sure, you get a warning, but so what.

No warning here.
Sometimes you do win a little victory. Not often.

I get a "this dock is not optimized" warning. Optimized my ass, it syncs and charges, what else would it do?

It's not optimized for Apple. They want you to buy a new dock so you won't get that message. (not really, but that's sure what it seems like - someone should hack the code in the iOS to see why it spits out a warning when it works just fine).

It's probably something minor like the voltage on the charge being a watt off or something.

That's probably it. Kind of like the slow charging that you get on the iPad if connected to a USB 1.1 port. It'll work but don't expect a quick charge.

OT - The iPhone 4 does seem to recharge very quickly. I'll have to do some timings but my impression is that it's fast. The iPad exhibits similar charging quickness also.

I can't remember the review, but I seem to recall one of the iPhone 4 reviewers stating it took about 90 minutes for the phone to get charged? Definitely an improvement over my 3G.

Actually, I'm using my dock from my original iPhone. The only thing that doesn't match up are the rounded v. square corners, but otherwise it is a PERFECT fit....tight, centered, and holds the phone firmly in place with no leaning back.

Yes, about 90 minutes for a full charge.

And backups in iTunes are blazingly fast.
