Does anyone know when WoW is going to go "Universal" (native for Intel Macs)? Or has it already done so? This will a huge deciding factor in whether or not I get a new iMac.

From the 1.9.0 patchnotes:

Important Note for Mac OS X Users
The minimum supported Mac OS X revision for WoW will be changed in a post-1.9.0 patch, from 10.3.5 to 10.3.9. If you are running 10.3.5 - 10.3.8 and need to get the free update, you can use Software Update or you can click here for the direct download. This change will make it easier for us to release future updates to the game, for example to support upcoming Mac models based on Intel processors.
So yeah, sounds like it should be pretty soon if they're already telling people to get ready for it.

Yep I just found the official "Blue" post on the WoW forums. Man, these guys are good! They will have a fully native WoW out with 1.92 patch. I love Blizzard.

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/th...rt&T=14711&P=1

In case anyone is wondering -

We will release the next WoW patch - version 1.9.2 - as a universal binary for MacOS X. It has been in internal testing for quite some time and we are getting ready to ship it.

More information as it becomes available.

Somewhat related to the upcoming universal WoW build, today's Penny Arcade updates and comic are pretty funny. A cold front is moving into Hades, and both Tycho and Gabe — who've previously made quite a lot of fun of Mac users — want to join the Light Side.

They've updated the post; as 1.9.2 has been rushed into patching today to fix the 'player skipping' bug, the Universal patch is going to be 1.9.3, sometime by the end of January.

Thank god. That bug is incredibly annoying, espcially in PvP.

It was a LOT like lag, only it would happen with a ping of 25ms.

Wow, I never realized that was a bug. I just figured the other guy had a ping of 80,000 or something.

It's fast, fast as in a superlative and not a comparative sense. One wonders why Steve Jobs didn't blow the crowd away with the saturated colors and excessive frame rates of WoW on an iMac. It loaded fast, and when the first character popped up in town, the frame rate never dropped below 60, and this was pretty much going full tilt in the settings.

I think the game performance will do a lot to quiet any remaining PowerPC partisans who are fundamentally at odds with the idea of Apple going to Intel.

For years and years we've heard how great the PPC has been, but especially in the past two, it has been increasingly embarrassing to watch the game performance disparity between the platforms grow and grow. Aspyr, et al can only do so much without huge teams rewriting even more code than they already do just to optimize it enough to close the gap a bit. Even then, you would run into bottlenecks on the PPC mobos that have now been eliminated.

On that note, I cannot wait to see how Command and Conquer: Generals and Sim City 4 play with the (hopefully) inevitable Universal Binaries.
