Can someone tell me the steps to get rid of AOL -- and run another ISP?

My best friend (a decided non-techie) bought a used DV SE -- with none of the original software discs.

He hates AOL and is willing to trying another ISP. I discovered that AOL is firmly entrenched on the iMac and that I believe the Internet Config is missing from the files -- and whatever other pieces one needs to run IE5 and another ISP (which I tried unsuccessfully to do.)

Thanks.

Best thing for getting rid of AOL is this:

Do a search for AOL. Drag anything you find to the trash.

Do a search fo America Online. Do the same.

That should kill it off.

Now, as for Internet Config - in MacOS 8.5 and up it's going to be called "Internet" and it'll be in the control panels folder.

Make sure that's there, and make sure he has:

Remote Access
Modems
TCP/IP

in the control panels. These are the only control panels he needs. There are several extensions, but AOL doesn't do anything to them, so they should all be intact.

Try opening TCP/IP. It should just open up.

You should be able to configure the connection normally from here.

You can also use the Internet Setup Assistant, if you can find that on his computer.

Before you trash AOL, make sure you cancel your account. (Use Keyword: cancel.)

by all means, do use the Internet Setup Assistant

and see this info regarding a free ISP: http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Forum2/HTML/000560.html

there are other tips, search the forums for keywords 'free isp', etc

and yes cancel your AOL account with extreme prejudice and malice aforethought.

Don't forget to do a Sherlock search for AIM--that pernicious AOL Instant Messenger--and dump it too!
And that's true too.--Shakespeare, King Lear
