I try doing the fork + spoon spaghetti thing with the knife and fork but I still end up having to slurp up the damn stuff.

The proper method is to trap a few noodles with the fork, then use the curve of the plate in the same way as you would use a spoon. It's not good manners to use a spoon, actually.

Also, bite off what doesn't end up in your mouth and let it drop. Slurping is bad, at least with European food. I've been told slurping is more acceptable in Asia, one could presume because the lack of forks.

As Thorzdad said, real Italians don't use a spoon

And yes, slurping is very common in Japan, although I still have to get used to it (give me a few more months). Gives me goose bumps every time one of my office mates eats his lunch.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
