this has hit me harder than I would have thought, been binge watching ToS episodes all day.

We should celebrate his life, not dwell on his death!
No one lives forever, but I think Mr Nimoy did have a very long and fulfilling life. Living to age 83 is a great accomplishment in of itself, and if he had never smoked he may have lived even longer.
If you smoke, please quit - you will live a longer and healthier life if you do!
You are right. I just couldn't do the "Leonard Nimoy - RIP" etc as I'd seen it on several Sci-Fi and special effects sites all day, and wanted something different. Spock was one of my childhood heros. He did other work in the 1950's as bad guys etc, but Spock really stood out.
and the rest of the text from the SUN is pretty lame. "Mourning the death of Mr. Spock? I'm mourning the death of one of my childhood idols. My interest in appliance make-up started with him. His character was overly discussed at the time, as to whether the audience would accept a main character with pointed ears. When I was younger I was a fan of (UGH!)Lost in Space. I was a Dr. Smith fan, but his character became an ass by the end of the 1st season. Spock was a far deeper character, and was used for several episodes that dealt with him being an outsider and someone between 2 worlds. We knew Nimoy as some other characters too, from bit part bad guys on the multitude of cowboy shows from the '50's, including being one of Lee Van Cleefs' gang in "Have Gun - Will Travel". He did well replacing Martin Landau in Mission Impossible, and in the early reality shows. He was funny and smart in the interviews he did during and after Star Trek TOS. Sometimes when a person passes we become overly somber, but somehow I don't think Mr. Nimoy would have wanted that. Instead he probably wanted a lighter remembrance, and enjoy his many accomplishments.
Starman, if the title of this thread didn't make you immediately think "Star Trek," then it didn't work. But it is not disrespectful, just not overly somber. From what I know of Nimoy (as a "Trekie" from way before the term was coined), he wasn't a terribly somber person.
And yes, he did sing The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Which kind of helps make my point. Nimoy was not Spock, Spock (who was not always dry and unhumorous, either) was a role he played, and perhaps an alter ego after all that time. You can be sad about his passing, but that doesn't mean a simple reference to how almost all of us came to know him is inherently disrespectful. It's in how it's presented and handled. I don't think any of us has handled it poorly. On the other hand, Toronto's Sun has never impressed me as a very respecttul newspaper - it looks a l ot like New York's Post most of the time... It's all in how you handle it.

Bingo.
If they had put our thread title ("He's dead, Jim...") instead of the attention-whore garish one they used ("HE'S DEAD, JIM!") it would have been a totally different cover. But that's what the Toronto Sun do.
Mankind's only chance is to harness the power of stupid.
Everytime McCoy used that phrase it was serious rather than silly. It was the fans of the show that made it silly. McCoy, though he was emotional and colorful, was very serious about his work. I think it's just perfect.
Anyway, I liked this quote:

The Sun was whoring for loonies, BadKosh was paying tribute to the guy. Both provided the context necessary for (almost) everyone to realize what was going on in each scenario.
... said the guy trolling the Leonard Nimoy memorial thread.

Quit being an "AH". You don't actually know any of us. I've watched ALL the Star Trek TV shows and PAID to see ALL the movies. I have several accurate models of the USS Enterprise*, and as a child went as Mr. Spock for 3 Halloweens in a row. I can quote from most all the TOS episodes, and still watch TOS on Netflix. I follow the restoration of the 11' SPFX model at the Smithsonian. I learned of what the appliance make up ears looked like and made my own for those last 2 Halloweens When I went as Spock. What does YOUR Star Trek resume say?
* I just spent over 400 bucks on the Big polar Lights kit, the Lighting kit, and the motors and nacelle ugrades so I can make an accurate to the series model to do SPFX with. I also still have my ORIGINAL TOS enterprise model, the Shuttlecraft, the 1/1000 Second pilot model Enterprise, a repop of the TOS Enterprise, an E in 2 different scales to go with my DS9 model, a Voyager, and Klingon model. Unbuilt is the 'refit Enterprise' of which I have 2.

I think the TOS episodes to watch for Leonards part are:
Amok Time
Spocks Brain
The Trouble with Tribbles
A Piece of the Action
Space Seed
The Doomsday Machine
The pilot episode
The Menagerie parts 1, 2
The Devil in the dark
Mirror, Mirror
Journey to Babel
There are many more of course

Don't care. Any self-respecting fan wouldn't use that as a topic title.
So Shatner is copping major flak for not going to the funeral. Thoughts?
Agreed. No business of anyone's to comment negatively on. Even if he simply wanted to not let a good cause that had been planning an event for months around him down then that's reason enough.
Worst case he could have been facing some harsh late cancelling clauses in his appearance contact.
This space for Hire! Reasonable rates. Reach an audience of literally dozens!
Shatner and nimoy weren't always best friends. There was supposed to be some kind of rivalry about who got invited to be in the reboots... unless it was just playacting?
