I've recently acquired a 4th or 3rd(not sure) Gen 20GB ipod, when I say acquired I mean I didn't want or need one so its got no accessories besides a USB cable.

It was my brother's but after he stole my Xbox and all my games I took his ipod as collateral and so I am wanting to remove all of his music so I went though and did a factory reset type thing only to find that it automatically updated and now gives me the picture of a power outlet which I've read means you need to plug it into a mains power outlet. As I said I only have the USB cable. I've looked around and I am not sure what I'd need to buy if the travel charger will suffice or what. I don't understand why if the ipod can be charged via USB why it needs mains power to update.

It's wanting wall power to ensure a successful firmware update. Should the battery die while it's updating its firmware, the iPod is toast. I've always had at least one wall adapter handy, so I'm not sure how to go about giving it power without one... maybe a car charger or a friend's adapter.

Also, if it has four buttons in a row along the middle of the front, it's a 3G iPod.
