Hi all,

I recently had the hard drive changed out and when the technician reloaded the OS, he used no password and set the Finder to "user." I learned how to set a password by running Disc 1 of the operating CD's, but I don't know how to change "user" to my first name. Is there anyway to do it?

Do you guys use your first name, or what do you use?

The OS is 10.3

Go into the accounts control panel and create a new user with the name you want. Copy any files you want over. Then delete the 'user' account.

As an alternative to (Apple's method of) enabling the root user account, Macworld offers an approach using sudo in Terminal: "Changing the short username in Leopard"

I'm not sure a Leopard trick will work in Panther.

Yeah, I vote for BLAZE_MkIV’s response if you haven’t had it back for too long. You should even be able to copy your preferences files from /Users/user/Library/Preferences to the corresponding location in your new “firstname” user folder, if you’ve been making customizations to a bunch of your applications.
