I wondered.

I've been on two miles tickets to mystery islands and is it wrong that I don't want to invite any of the weirdos I've met so far to our island?

Also, what did Derwin say my name was back home? She who steals flowers?

He went on to say that name let’s you know “what a person is capable of”, which I thought was funny and weird.

You’re absolutely supposed to be choosy with your residents. I made the mistake of not being that way. I felt bad about them being out in the middle of nowhere, so I invited each one in succession.

Now my island is almost full with a less than ideal set.

Some of my residents are interesting, but some are kinda dull. Variety is poor. I have three birds and two bovines.

This was bothering me, and I was wondering if there was some way I could vote animals off the island.

There is, but exactly what I was worried would happen, happened. I’m way to endeared to all of them at this point to kick anyone off. Even the dull ones have something which makes me like them. One is super nice. One writes nice letters. One sings.

Just yesterday I met a candidate who seemed truly awful. Not an option I wanted to risk at this point.

Mime sheep and actor cow were most assuredly not candidates for me. Currently we have a... hiphop hippo and a fitness buff goat? The hippo alternates between being standoffish if I try to chat her up, and saying I should invite her over. The chat options are never, "come on over."

I haven’t figured out how to invite someone over. I’m not sure it’s possible.

My (original resident) fitness buff is Hamlet the hamster, and he’s awesome. When you were visiting, he (politely) scolded me for talking to him instead of you.

My (original resident) stand-offish is Hazel the squirrel. Likes to party. I don’t think she’s actually mad when she’s being stand-offish, but I don’t push it.

Derwin the duck is nerdy, and kind of paranoid.

Bangle the tiger is awesome. She’s gregarious.

Gladys the ostrich is a little dull, but writes good letters.

Sandy the ostrich is very dull, but super-nice.

Zell the gazelle is a kinda dull hipster. He sings.

Pashmina the goat is a little dull, but a snappy dresser, and also sings.

The awful one was a rhino, who’s shtick seemed to be being rude.

Was actually able to outrun a hive murder hornets and take shelter at Derwin’s!

Also gave in and decided to look up Stalk Market tips on the Internet and why my bamboo will produce no babies.

Tips weren’t much use, but I figured out why my bamboo is acting like captive panda.

One of the reasons I was annoyed by the cow on the other island, is just about when I was to capture a bee, she showed up to closetalk so my A click got her talking and not my bee caught. :/

The bugs at night are sneakier and cooler. Also scorpions? Is this island Survivor?

That’s unforgivable! If you see the net, BACK OFF MAN!

Along those lines I hate picking a flower instead of the item on the ground, or seeing a 4,000 bell butterfly as I go in a door.

I feel kinda let down by night bugs right now. The scorpion is cool, and there’s that camouflaged moth I scare away before I notice it 99% of the time, but otherwise, isn’t it just regular moths?

turnips are high ticket, I take it?

also that shovel vid is spot on.

I've cought some cool centipedes at night digging up rocks. I also left a stump near my house that seems to attract oddly colored beetles. No idea is they are expensive tho. I lack the patience to sell items one at a time, those raccoons are damn chatty.

Oooh... good tip! I’ve been immediately digging up my stumps. I forgot about the centipede. It horrified me and I repressed the memory.

I may have mentioned, I accidentally destroyed not one, not two, but three boulders on my island. I’m very mineral poor. It’s the one thing I’ve done I feel the game won’t let me fix. At least yet.

I can raid mystery islands, so it’s not the end of the world, but I can’t casually build iron things. In the beginning it had to be strictly for tools.

The idea with the turnips is you hope they get high ticket later in the week (Sunday is the only day you can buy them). So, I needed a place for them to sit. They unfortunately can’t go into storage.

Even though I know exactly what’s coming, that video still cracks me up every time I watch it.

For the longest time, I didn’t realize you could plant a fruit to grow a fruit tree.

When I found a mystery island with non-native fruit, I used to steal every tree off the island.

Impressed I can fit 14 fully grown trees in my carry-on luggage.

Museum is open, and store is being upgraded. We will have a new resident soon. Meringue, a pastry loving rhino. That makes 2 rhinos. Kid liked her. I was still holding out for someone better... but at least she's not annoying?

My yard is going for trailer park chic.

Congrats on the store! With the store comes Sunday visits from Typhoid turnip girl.

I had store and museum construction on the same day. That day sucked.

Is Biff the other Rhino? I had him in my first game, which I restarted after about 20 minutes.

Most of my island is still a big flower nursery. I haven’t really decided where I want to go with it. I don’t have enough decorative options yet.

I mentioned speeding up the crafting animation by spamming the A button, but I just learned if you hold down the left button (above the left trigger), it will speed through the dialogue “I made an [X]”. Once you start crafting you can just keep the left button held down.

The B button also speeds through the dialogue, but then there’s a risk of accidentally canceling out of crafting altogether.

That there’s no crafting queue is one of the complaints I see repeatedly. I guess I’m on the side where it’s okay because the game is in real time. The complainers allege that’s masking a lack of content.

Speeding up chatty chat chat chat is good. The "I caught an X! It's <a pun>!" while cute, gets repetitive as heck. Should stop after the 3rd or so catch... at least per day?

Perhaps it's the minecrafter in me, but I am hoping that the shmancy crafting table I see others have includes the ability to keep it stocked with supplies rather than carry them around all the time.

You mean you aren’t interested in your what grades your bass is getting?

What’s your favorite flavor of clam? Ironically, mine is clam.

With the crafting, my guess is a no.

One of the things which bothers me most about the game is furniture with obvious utility is only decorative. I should be able to put umbrellas in my umbrella stand, or tools in my tool cart.

I put my supplies in storage, and then have a crafting table in my house, so it’s essentially the the same thing.

Then I have a table set up on the left and right coasts for clams.

I think my roach mission may have expired. Nobody wants the thing.

I’ve found three different varieties of stump bug, so thanks again for the tip!

Emptied the turnip vault today. Prices have been rotten all week, but at least I didn’t actually lose money.

Didn’t realize there was a way to see how much space was available in storage. Turns out I have over a thousand available slots. Despite this discovery, I’m still compulsively selling everything which isn’t necessary. I clearly haven’t recovered from back when I didn’t have enough storage. More of my “abused gamer” habits.

A great case for the "craft all" option, my minecraft experience says. Good luck.

My hot item is a shell lamp. Which would be great if I only had iron!

These raccoons have quite the scam going. 3 more people are headed toward our island and they asked the kid to gather supplies and furnish their houses! What kind of island is this, anyway.

Kind of an indentured servitude sort of island. Serfing is very big.

I think I mentioned I pulverized three boulders, so I’m completely hosed in the iron department. With a combo of rationing and strip mining mystery islands, I finally got my hoard past 8 slots of 30, which is when I told myself it was okay to start selling off surplus. I have a better feeling for the economy now, and that feels like way more than necessary. Keeping 3 slots of 30 in reserve is probably more like it, but I’m skittish because of how important it is for tools. With all the other ingredients, once they’re in a hot item I drill them down to three slots.

I’ve skipped low ingredient count hot items like this before, but it’s been a looong time since the hot item’s used regular wood, so I had 72 slots full.

Whether there should be ways to speed up crafting is an interesting question. I’ve put so much time into the game, it highly incentivizes me to justify it as is.

Which I will probably do in post form, but later... I don’t want Nook’s to close on me.

That was pretty miserable.

I ultimately believe the designers don’t want you to do things like that, so they punish you for it.

Similarly, they don’t really punish you for not doing it. I could have made a higher quantity ingredient item, and gotten rid of the wood in a fraction of the time and the game would “penalize” me by only giving out 250K in bells instead of hot item 500K. That’s not really a penalty.

To put it another way, I think the designers didn’t put in a “craft all” because that’s not the game they want you to play.

In other news, the animals on my island have given me the nickname “slick”.

You are most welcome!

Sorry it was too late for the hot item, though there will certainly be another.

Let me know if you could use some bamboo! I’ve only found one mystery island with it so far.

Do most of your mystery islands have native fruit? I’ve found two cherries, and one bamboo. The rest have been apples.

I received a generous gift of apples, so I cleared out an interior patch of woods and planted em in a neat row. 2 days later, time to harvest!
Now, another resident is claiming that I have no exclusive right to that land, and therefore, the apples are hers too.
Dangerous socialist thinking.

There are several!

In fact, on my island, there’s a recurring fight between me and government about how many fences we have. They keep on asking for more, and I keep replying “why must you divide us?”

Yeah that is so fas my main gripe, the “storyline” effectively forces you to build the island a certain way. What if I don’t want 10 villagers? What if I don’t want to upgrade my house anymore? Boo-urns.

Work still interfering with gaming?

We have achieved the KK Concert, and unlocked the Island builder. Paths! Rivers! I do wish ramps were included instead of being a Tom Nook money grab, but it is fun to terraform. Fireworks on Saturdays are also fun.

Scored a good selling price for turnips finally, 600bells.

Unfortunately, yes. It’s pretty much always that way. It took a plague to give me this kind of opening in the first place.

Fundamentally, the problem is I’m waaaaaay too addicted to video games, and I cope with the problem by not playing. I wouldn’t even have a Switch if it wasn’t for all the super-short retro arcade games. Put BotW or AC in my hands and I’ll check out for a month.
