I use VLC to watch DVDs on my iMac, and it has the option to crop the video to a specific aspect ratio. I use it to crop 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio DVDs to 16:10 (I find that nothing is really lost 99% of the time). Unfortunately, I have to do this every time I open up VLC. Anybody know how to set this as a default attribute--namely, have it override the standard aspect ration and always crop it to 16:10?

Add the --crop option to the shortcut you use to launch VLC.

If that's too hard, you can use 'c' to quickly cycle through crop ratios instead of going through the menus.

Cheers for that. Looking into it, using the command-line is more intended for Windows; I could use it through the Terminal, but I don't want to launch VLC with the Terminal every time I use it. I think I'll just stick to using 'C' to switch cropping.

I was having the same problem for a while too. I use my Macbook as a tv when I go to sleep. I just throw a bunch of videos on my playlist and go to bed. I was sick of constantly pressing "C" to change the crop. I don't know if this way works for everyone, but this is how I got mine to default it's crop to 16:10.

Make sure your VLC player is up to day. Then simply go to: VLC player preferences > video > Then enter in "16:10" (or whatever crop you want) and then click save.

Good Luck

I am now in the same predicament. I recently updated my VLC player and it seems that the video preferences do not have a "Default Crop" option. Does anyone know of a way or option to crop to "16:10" by default in version 0.9.4? Thanks in advance!
