What are some apps you guys are hoping that will be written/released for the iPhone? I realize Apple said this phone will be closed, but I bet apps will be available down the road through the itunes store.

I'm hoping for a flickr/picasa integration, IM that uses data instead of text messages, and some sort of financial app to keep track of expenses.

Password storage and skype.... i didn't consider those, but definatly on my list now. For the password storage, I'd like a companion app to run on the computer as well. Or how about just making the keychain easier to navigate?

How about a mobile home folder where you can carry a few full size apps with you and run them from any computer?

I'd like to see a mobile TV Guide widget as well.

I would love to be able to use it as a remote control (to replace that tiny white one) that came with my iPod Hi Fi.

I can imagine those with newer laptops (with Front Row) would hope for similar functionality.

Seems like a real killer app for the device - much like salling(sp?) clicker did.

The killer app would be an RSS reader that will automatically D/L Feeds and keep track of what has been read and what has not.

I use Newsbreak on my Windows Mobile Phone and it is indispensible

My dream app is simply that they open up Widget development for the iPhone.

I don't think that would jeopardize the stability of the device, and it would open up a lot of possibilites, including a lot of the ones suggested above.

To make me really happy to replace my Treo 650 it needs an encrypted password storage app with a corresponding desktop app (Apple could make it work with Keychain). On my Treo I currently use Passwords Plus.

Next in line would be an ebook reader. If it was compatible with eReader books that would be really cool, but I wouldn't care too much if Apple had their own proprietary eBook format and sold ebooks through iTunes.

In terms of nice to haves after that, software to view/edit Microsoft Office docs would be great, and either iChatAV (including audio/video chats) or Skype would be very cool.

skype is the logical reason for restricting apps on the iPhone. At+t isn't going to allow you to make free calls from a phone that theyre supposed to be making cell money from.

Of course it works, I have it on my Treo already. Tell it on which hemisphere you are and where the sun is. Since it knows the time it can then display a compass with your heading.

Yep - and it should be linked to Google Maps too, so the road you see off to your right in real life shows as being off to your right on your iPhone. Turn around, and the map would change to match.

SlingPlayer seconded. Some sort of Salling Clicker-like functionality, which I'm sure is in the works, and iWork "Lite" with Numbers (or Sheets, or whatever they call it when it finally comes out) would do it for me.

Tom Tom for GPS navigation.

Maybe they could squeeze GPS into the iPhone for release? A friend has an Orange windows mobile phone that has GPS built in and it works pretty nice with Tom Tom.

Maybe jabber chat support too over wifi - let's just say gaim / adium

That's funny. I'm starting third year too. I'm still going to get the iPhone, hoping that Up To Date will either work over the internet through wi-fi or somehow I can convert it into notes accessible locally on the iPhone (doubtful). Local access while being searchable would obviously be ideal.

Another vote here for a password/important information application which syncs with the Desktop.

I like to lock my phone all the time and require some sort of basic (quick) method of opening it up to me. On the Treo I had a program called Teal-Lock which lets me get into the phone with by pressing two keys in succession. Fast enough not to be tedious, but enough protection to stop someone lifting my phone and seeing my call list, information, calendar etc.

I'd love to see a clever implementation of this. How about a fingerprint app? Only you can get into your phone and information by placing your finger on the screen? They have this on USB flash drives, so why not on the iPhone.

I didn't see anyone mention a voice recorder for recording thoughts. I've always used this feature pretty regularly on all my phones, and hope the iPhone either has this feature, or someone writes one.

I'd agree with the TomTom idea, or some kind of GPS that can link to a bluetooth GPS aerial and use Google maps, for a kind of street map navigation, with all the address book stuff for points on the map so you can do a Steve and order 4000 coffees from Starbucks. When SJ was on stage doing that, I did think the iPhone had GPS built into it for him to be able to do that, but the location must have been bookmarked on the map or something.

Skype would be good, as well as iChat/MSN (if only the thing had a video calling camera on the front for video chats on the phone to other phones or Mac/PC chat messenger apps, and also used as an iSight when docked with a Mac, but thats a hardware dream, not software....)

Universal remote bluetooth app for a Mac (does it have IR?)

A link to your Macs iTunes library, over wifi or phone network (ie. iTunes Slingbox)

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

ICHAT-a crucial selling point for me,wireless internet communication is the future, wifi networks are becoming more and more popular i would like to connect to a network and chat with my buddies with text or audio conferencing as well as file sharing.

also i like to listen to some radio stations in itunes if i could access them via the iphone's ipod that would be great as well as streaming my itunes music to iphone.

I'd like it if the iPhone would work with the Nike+ system. Best case is if it somehow can pick up the signal transmitted by the sensor without needing the ipod connector based receiver but that's probably asking too much. One less thing to carry when going on a run!

Dictaphone/call recorder
Call manager (blacklist, white list)
GPS compatible map
Skype/MSN VOIP
Encrypted notebook for bank/personal data
Pdf/.doc viewer
SSH client

Hmmm, as a matter of fact all these apps are on my N80... nice, I don't have to break a sweat whether the iPhone will have them or not...

Not sure if this has been discussed, but I keep hearing that Apple may not (will not?) initially open the iPhone up to 3rd party apps. But isn't this faulty? I mean, what are widgets? They can be written by anyone correct? And don't they run under OS X?

Skype.

A remote for controlling your Mac. In other words a more pimped out Apple Remote.

I doubt widgets would support anything more than simple scripting. One needs a lot more for things like Skype.

I'd just like to point out there's a similar, but more simplistic version that's free for cell phones.

I use it all the time on my Samsung A960.

From http://www.apple.com/iphone/internet/:

Mail
iPhone uses a rich HTML email client that fetches your email in the background from most POP3 or IMAP mail services and displays photos and graphics right along with the text.
