Gmail won't work with safari :(

Hey guys,
When I try to access gmail over wifi, I get this error using safari:
Safari can’t open the page “ http://gmail.com/” because it could not connect to the server “gmail.com”
Firefox works fine. Using the latest version of Safari, 10.5.1, logged in as administrator.
Thoughts?

This often happens to me. Try firefox or another alternative internet browser. Thats the best advice I can give you.

I get this sometimes with Safari, but reloading the page usually fixes it.

Thanks for the replies. No matter how many times I refresh, gmail will never load in safari. Works fine on my desktop

I cant really think of anything. It is a clean install of 10.5 from a wiped drive, with only safari, firefox, iscroll2, adium installed.

That's strange. One that does often solve problems is reinstalling a system updater. You might try downloading 10.5.1 from Apple and reinstalling it.

Try turning IPv6 off, see if it helps. I couldn't connect to various sites (ie google.com) fro some time until I turned IPv6 off.

I just looked at my Gmail with Safari (v/ 3.0.4) just to see if I had a problem -no- but I had an actual Nigerian scam email there! Wow!
That sounds like it could be either a defective or corrupted installation of Safari, or something wrong with your DNS settings (or the server itself). Try this: instead of "gmail.com", enter 64.233.185.19 (and/or 64.233.185.83) in the address bar. Amazon has these IPs: 72.21.206.5, 72.21.203.1, 72.21.210.11, and 72.21.192.209- try them manually too.
If getting through with IPs works, you have a DNS problem, not a Safari problem. Let us know which way it goes.

Both of the gmail IPs take me right to google.com, not to gmail, but both work without a hitch.

Deleted safari, trashed prefs, re-installed from leopard dvd. No go.

IPv6 is set to off already

More network info. Connecting using Verizon Fios, 20 down/5 up, no problems with my wired desktop. Using a Buffalo router with DD-WRT, had the same problems when using the ghetto actiontek verizon router.

Open Terminal. At the prompt type "dscacheutil -flushcache" (without the quotes).
Note that this command replaces lookupd from past versions of OS X. It "flushes" your DNS cache, requiring the system to re-query for new name-to-IP resolution, which could help you out a lot. It's troubling that reinstalling Safari didn't help and that Firefox has worked the whole time...

I have the same problem, it started two days ago when someone installed firefox in my macbook. My gmail notifier then launched firefox, so i changed the default browser back to safari. Ever since then gmail stopped loading in safari. Coincidence? I dont think so, I never had a problem with gmail in Safari until I installed firefox...

I changed my gmail language setting to English (UK), and enabled Java Script in safari's preferences, and it works again. I have no idea why.
