I want to upgrade my hdd in my macbook - but I don't want to lose all my data, have to reinstall everything, etc.
Any free ghosting solutions out there?
Thanks!
Charles

You want SuperDuper!
The unregistered version (i.e. FREE) will allow you to clone your hard drive. I've used this several times for hard drive upgrades and it works great.

I use the Restore function in Disk Utility. If you choose "erase destination" as part of the clone, it does a super-fast block copy.

Of course, these solutions assume you have an 2.5" external hard drive/enclosure
I've used Disk Utility to do this as well (without the erase destination). It works flawlessly.

Forget third-party tools like SuperDuper or CCC. Just use built-in Disk Utility's Restore function.
Hook up an external disk and clone to the external drive. Swap the internal drive. Restore back from the external clone. You can also find Disk Utility on the install DVD (it's in the installer's utility menu). Boot and clone/restore from the DVD to get the super-fast block copy tooki mentioned.

(1) Put your old drive in an external enclosure.
(2) Install the new hd into your MacBook.
(3) Plug in your old drive in the enclosure.
(4) Pop in the install DVD of OS X and lauch Disk Utility from within. Restore from your old drive.
(5) Go, get a coffee, go running, do the dishes, etc. This may take a while
(6) When it's finished, you reboot into your old system. It's exactly how it's used to be.
