Hey, all. I was toying around with the idea of saving some work in the PNG format, but remembered that some older browsers don't support it. So, I'm kind of doing a poll/test kind of thing. I'm posting a sig (for simplicity) in PNG, and I just want to know who can or can't view it in their browsers. My suspicion is that most people have 4.0 browsers or later, but that's why I'm testing.
The sig is exactly the same as the one in my signature (which is in jpeg format). So, lemme know!
Thanks!

In IE 5.0 for PC it draws an [X]
Seems like it just doesn't exist...
PNG would be great if you could use the semi-transparency masks to do some cool layering. For example I would like to use a 50% red png file as a table-background. Worked great in Dreamweaver, but it became opaque when viewed in IE and Netscape...grrrr...

Well, it does that when I load the page, too. The stumper is that I made a file helper in IE 5 for a PNG format before I got on the internet, so it should have worked fine. I used the Pictureviewer app to view it, and the option for PNG was in the file types supported. That stumps me completely. If a browser has file helpers, and the app you choose to open a particular file has a PNG format option, wouldn't it stand to reason that the picture would show up? I guess I'm making this way too easy.
Apparently, there's a catch somewhere. I'll mess around with the settings for that helper a little, then try it again.

An incredibly cool application of PNGs is up at http://www.panic.com/ under their Audion skins main page. Click the icons and the perfectly masked skin pops up (alpha masked, thus the PNG).
The thing is, IE 5 and NS 4.7 (dunno about 6) don't directly support PNGs..but the Quicktime plugin, standard in both, does. So instead of using the usual <img> tag, use an <embed> tag. I'm pretty sure that would work.. Take a look at the source code over at Panic.com to make sure though...

Hmmmmm. Tried the [embed] image [/embed] tags, but it just showed the actual text. Does UBB Code 6 support the embed tag? I have some experience in hand coding, but I still can't figure this one out.

embed is not enabled. otherwise i could embed an entire flash movie to take up the whole screen from within a post.
i've found that 8-bit PNG files display just fine in IE5 and Netscape 4.7x, but that 24-bit PNG files (especially any with alpha channels) only look good in Mac IE & Win9x IE. they look terrible in Netscape 4.7x.
tis a shame too. web images with alpha channels is such a cool idea. but someday...someday in the future...it will be fully supported. it must be so.

Ok. Now it worked. I saved it in 8-bit format, and now I can view it.
You guys?

Interestingly enough though you say that both the png and jpeg are of the same image, the green glow appears more intense in the jpeg than the png. Why is that? I'm not that familiar with png.

That's a good question. I noticed that, too, but didn't think much of it. Since this is officially the first PNG I've used, you've got me!
