I posted some time ago about the stupid decision of the IT head at my school to ban the Mac platform. Well, a little update: the decision has been rescinded

We got almost every faculty member to sign a petition against the banning, and we caught the head of IT in a couple of outright lies about running a mixed-platform environment.

The next goal for some of us is to see if we can get a more user friendly head of IT. This one is a real loser, and not just because of the Mac-banning schtick, either.

Anyway, I thought I should let you know the good news

(stereo)typical IT guy:

Macrintosh? You mean one of those plastic toy computers? Not on my network! That could compromise security. Also, i'd have to pull my head out of my ass.

The sad thing is that the general public believes whatever the IT people tell them. Which is one reason why I can't stand IT people. They are sort of like people in the intelligence community. Theyalways play that game of "I have a secret" or "I know more than you" bull crap. It's annoying.

Hey now, There are some of us IT people that recommend Macs to people for there networks. If I had my way at a School I would use all Macs but allow a mixed platform.

Well, maybe I should have said something regarding the IT person that pushes NT. Those are the ones I can't stand. People that push Mac are usually the ones who are more open minded and knowledgeable of the computer industry. So good on ya.

Well, they push what they know, and they're far more likely to know NT than mac. Most of the mac system admins I know seem to be self-taught people- I am, and the network I'm paid to keep running is 95% mac. If I'd gone to school for a comp sci degree, I might be an NT geek, and get paid better

I'm starting to warm up to NT, espicially when paired with Citrix Metaframe. The ability to share apps and the OS across platforms is just amazing. If only we could get Windows machines to run MacOS like that....

What would these outright lies be? This might be good for a couple of laughs...

my high school was all pc (compaqs and some old 486s)the first two years i attended, we had this snobby IT guy who was snickering at me b/c the library specialist (then a good freind of mine, not anymore) told him I was a mac user. One day while talking about this warranty on my mac to my friend, the IT bastard interrupted saying, "I'd hate to have to pay to fix those things." or something like that. He just stood there and giggled, and i wanted to kick his ass write then and there, but i couldn't b/c i was in school, now i'm entering my second year at a college that is "multi-platform" (mac/win/unix), and certain individuals are trying to push macs out, i gotta try to stop this from happening....

More pathetic than funny, really.

Lie # 1, that it costs US$150 per Mac to connect them to ethernet (the VP for Bus. and Finance actually believed that one).

Lie # 2, that her staff was unwilling to work on Macs (absolutely not true).

Lie # 3, that Macs required much more of her staff's time than PCs (that one was such a shocker that I was left speechless for a whole minute ).

Lie # 4, that Mac-produced documents are incompatible with PCs (she had MS Office in mind--go figure ).

As if those weren't bad enough, she actually ordered one of her staff members to send out an email affirming the expense of Macs and the unwillingness of the staff to work on them. The guy actually refused to send it

Our IT guy at school hates Macs.
Teachers have to go over his head to the district to get a mac.

He won't support them.
So guess who does
But I graduate next week, and then I wonder what will happen.
BTW, teachers are in awe over OSX, then they try and use it on the iMac DV - 400, and say it is damn slow.

G3 400, 384, 12 + 75 GB
PM 8500 - 150, 176, 4.3 GB
PM 7100 - 66, 32, 700 MB
PM 6100 - 66, 40, 1 GB
And the lowest of all:
Athlon Thunderbird 1000MHz, 128, 8GB

I think compaq servers are programmed to crash when they are most needed. The company I work for's compaq NT servers (not unix) seem to crash every friday around 3 oclock - just before people are starting to get ready to stop thinking about work..
