Since the 17"'s will be here soon, I was curious what sort of "accessories" you all ordered for your new PB's.
I ordered and received:
iCurve: I love it and it looks very cool with my 15.2 and will look even better with my 17".
Screensavr: (sp)? Pretty neat, but expensive piece of cloth --keeps the screen clean though-
Sleevecase for the 17": http://www.sfbags.com/ Absolutely the coolest sleeve. made to order with a flap. Fits right in my mountainsmith bag.
Logitech navigator wireless keyboard and mouse : Got it on ebay for 21.00!!

I hope you don't mean a piece of paper that you put on top of the keyboard... the User Manual that comes with any Apple laptop tells you not to put anything on top of the keyboard with the unit closed because it can cause it to accidently turn on and then heat will not dispurse correctly resulting in the unit overheating.

I think we all know that to put something on the keyboard before closing it will help to keep those marks off the screen....
I use a cloth (the ones you use to polish glasses with) on my keyboard, that doubles as a dusting cloth for my baby.
My laptop has yet to come on as a result of this, and I can see marks on my screen when I forget to use this cloth.
Yeah, yeah, I know about hinges and all that....
The new books should have a better clearance between the keyboard and screen...I [think]...
Not 100% on that though.

I pre-ordered at Apple Store on Apple.com, and got the Early-Bird special which rendered me a cool Powerbook G4 Launch t-shirt and a coupon for 10% off my entire purchase upon showing them my shipping invoice. So I gotta wait to get my accessories, which will include:
17" shoulder case (gotta have this to take my new PB places to show it off)
Airport Extreme Basestation (cause I'm jealous my mother has wireless net and I don't)
Connectix Virtual PC 6.0 (I'm switcher who uses AutoCAD)
Kensington cable lock thing (I'm a paranoid kinda guy)
and my maybe list:
iCurve (carpal tunnel and neck issues)
I already bought/own:
Keynote (trying to totally eliminate MSFT from my life)
Outlook2Mac (need my mail)
AppleCare (that shipped a couple days ago)
It may be only $3300 for the PB17, but it's $4000 to get more goodies to come with.

Read the post above yours. Don't ever put anything on top of the keyboard.

you poor saps - the 12" and the 17" have plennnty of space between the keyboard and the screen. I've had my 12" since the first shipping date, I use it as my main computer, and cart it to/from work everyday in a crowded bag - and havent had a single mark of any sort on the screen. I love it!

I read a review of the 12" PB in MacWorld and they claim the Kybd does not make the marks on the display like the TiBooks. Perhaps this will be the case with the MegaBook.

Give OpenOffice.org a try. It should handle most of your Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. You also have to install Apple's X11 software to get it to work.
Another accessory you might want to consider is an extra battery. According to Apple's Knowledge Base, you should be able to hot-swap the battery while the computer is asleep without connecting it to AC power (the same is not true for the 12" PowerBook)

Well, because of my "once-in-a-lifetime" ADC pricing, I went ahead and went all out on my order, I got:
- 17" PowerBook w/ 1GIG RAM
- 23" Apple Cinema HD Display (got this baby for ~$1,500 b/c of ADC!)
- 17" Brenthaven Shoulder Case
- AirPort Extreme Base Station
- DVI-to-ADC Converter
- HP PhotoSmart 320 Digital Camera
- SimpleTech 64MB Secure Digital Media Card
- Disk-On-Key 32MB USB-drive
- Griffin iCurve
- IOGear 4-port USB Mini-Hub
- Adesso Tru-Form ICE Ergo. Keyboard
- Logitech MX500 Optical Mouse
- Monsoon PlanarMedia 14 2.1 Sound System
- HP DeskJet 3820 Printer
- Canon LiDE 30 USB Scanner
- AppleCare Protection Plan
- Sony Fontopia MDR-EX70LP Earbuds
- Extra 17" PB Battery
- Belkin 10-outlet Surge Protector
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein Game
- Quake III: Gold Game
- Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix Game
- Microsoft Office v.X
- Virtual PC 6
- Adobe Photoshop 7
- A few other random peices of software
- OS X Jaguar Full-size Poster
- "Think Different" T-Shirt
- Graphite Apple Mouse Pad (above 3 from (from TheMissingBite.com))
- EastPak MasterMind Laptop Bookbag
- A very, very, very empty wallet
That's all I can think of at nearly 1am, lol, but I'm pretty sure that's about it, and I'm definitely going to be posting pics of my new setup as soon as my PowerBook arrives. In totally anticipation I already have everything setup (the display, the AirPort, etc.) and now I'm just waiting to get the PB to plug everything into.

Well, my on-order list is a little more humble than Assasyn's, but it's not too shabby all the same -
- Powerbook 17"
- Extra Battery
- another 512MB of RAM
- Apple Pro Keyboard (black keys)
- Airport Extreme w/o Modem Basestation
- Griffin Powermate
- iCurve stand
- Tom Bihn Smart Alex backpack
- Tom Bihn Monolith Sleeve
- Logitech MX-700 Mouse (I've already got one for my XP Box and it's awesome).
And as soon as Sarotech release a FW800 external enclosure of 3.5" drives, I'll be picking one of those babies up.
The best part of the deal? The powerbook and extra battery (the only two items I have on order from Apple directly) is only going to cost $2997.00 AUSTRALIAN. Work it out into your US dollars, but no matter how you look at it, it's a sweet deal!
YAY!

I too, like AssassyN made my order through the ADC student deal...and I too have emptied out the store.lol.
Although AssassyN, you said you have everything but your PB already? I am in Vancouver, BC....and with MY distributor the order has to be released all at once, so I can't get any items until all of them have arrived (obviously I'm waiting for the powerbook).
An interesting difference.

I'm across the straight from you Pamelah and I've been getting my stuff as it becomes available. Only thing left is the PB itself. It was an option through Apple.ca when I ordered it. Weird how you never got that choice through your distributor.

Yep, I've got everything but the PowerBook and the Brenthaven Case (though it was shipped on 3-14-03)...I *tried* to get everything shipped at once to avoid anxiety, lol, but they told me that they couldn't do so, strange indeed!

maelstrom65...how did you set up your ADC Student purchasing??
I had to sign up and pay the $99US...then I followed the link to the Canadian distributor which is "EMJ". I called them here in Vancouver to get access to their price list and they said I had to talk to someone in Toronto named Julia Martin to fax all my student info etc.. Then she gave me a temporary dealer number and sent me back to where I started at the EMJ here in Vancouver. I gave my order to the guy in charge and he said "cash only", and "pick it up all at once".
Now I sit here waiting.
How did YOU do it???

I'm sorry..guess I should have specified that I'm not using ADC. I'm not a student...haven't been one for 20 years. This is all done through an Apple Loan right on the apple.ca website on Jan 27th.
Signed up for it and got approved in about 10 min. Phoned Apple and dealt with a Devon L'Ecluse for another 5 min getting some info (such as "did I want it all shipped at once or as items become available?"). After that it was a done deal and the waiting began in earnest.
Most of the stuff arrived in a few days. The brenthaven bag got here about a week ago and the PB is on it's way I assume.
Cheers

I don't, strictly because that the user manual says not to. Plus I have had only one mark from the keyboard on it and I took a cloth that was damp and it came right odd.

User's manual aside (and I believe it doesn't mention paper or screen protectors specifically, just "things" or something of the sort) I don't see how a very thin screen protector could cause any problems. There is supposedly more space between the keys and screen than the earlier models, so logically it should be safer than the earlier ones. And many many people use screen protectors with earlier models without problems.
However, even if there is more space, that doesn't necessarily mean that screen protection is unnecessary, because the keys contacting the screen problem comes from flexing of the case when the machine is in a bag, not because the keys touch the screen all the time.

Well I stumbled upon a great pic hosting website, and I've uploaded all the pics I currently have to it, and I've set it up so that anyone that wants to view them can have access to them by going to:
http://www.picturestage.com and typing "assassyn" as the Login Name and "macnn" as the password (minus the quotes on both words).
Enjoy!

I wonder if someone is going to produce an external keyboard that has a similar finish to the AlBooks? I was in a local Mac store yesterday and they tried to sell me a keyboard that looked like the iBook's. Was afraid to touch it cause it was so pretty and white. Will probably get a black one I guess.

They say the mind bends and twists in order to deal with the horrors of life...
...Sometimes the mind bends so much it snaps in two. :)

From Tom Binh (a great company) there is the Monolith and the Brain Cell. These are the same sleeve basically, except the Monolith is vertical instead of horizontal.
Go to this post for other bag and sleeve makers.

Hope this helps. $30 is a great price. I'm not one to spend $50 on just a sleeve. And the Mitre is well built and looks great with the 17"!

Damn...wish I was a student and could get the ADC/Student discounts. Would love an iMac or even a Dual G4 desktop system as well. Had to choose one or the other and the Powerbook won. Maybe someday...

Ahh, this site seems to be a more "Windows-friendly" site, my apologies! But there's good news, I've uploaded all of my images to a very "Mac-friendly" site and I'm positive everyone can view them by clicking this link: Click HERE
Enjoy, and let me know if there's anymore issues!

I had to also choose between the two, and Griffin promptly updated their website to assure customers that the iCurve *does* sufficiently hold the 17" and 12" PowerBooks, and so I chose the iCurve because it's beautiful, sufficient, and much cheaper than the Dome. Too, it has an open bottom to allow for much improved cooling when your notebook is on the iCurve.
