okay, I know that this is kind of off topic.

I've noticed that a lot of people have these streem lined buddie lists
on their desktops.

Is that a program or is it just part of the picture?

If its a program what program is it?
I don't like the standard look of aim produced by aol for mac.

I think you need Developer Tools installed, then you open it with Quartz Composer (formerly Pixelshox Studio) and take it from there.

Quartz Composer is worth a poke around in, it can do some pretty neat stuff and anything you create in it can be used as a screensaver in 10.4.
