What do you have a lot of that goes above and beyond a 'normal' level? I was thinking about it today and how it might reveal some interesting things about us. Does someone have a hundred kitchen knives? 9 TVs? 4 ironing boards? 30 blankets? It could be related to a hobby I suppose.

I can't really think of one right now...so...you go first.

I used to collect computers - at one point I had 10+ Macs in my tiny dorm room. It got out of hand and I ditched them all.

I don't have a lot of a single thing as much as I have a lot of random stuff. I don't like tossing things I could use in the future, so I have odd items in my drawers.

Books. I have too many books. I really really love the large 'atlas-type' books that I have. Atlas of World History, Dawn of Civilization, Atlas of the Bible etc. We moved last March, but I used to have a two car garage and the space for one car was filled with cardboard boxes of books. They're in storage due to lack of space.

I've went through a small spate of collecting snowboards for a while. I had five at one point. Then I went down to two because I haven't done any riding this past year....but I just bought another monster alpine board, so I'm back on my game.

I suppose three Macs and a PC is a bit more than strictly necessary for survival. A 4th (?) Gen iPod, an iPod touch, and an iPod shuffle might be slightly unnecessary, too.

But mostly, I think the thing I have most of without it being really necessary (close, though) would be dictionaries. I have 68 dictionaries—and since I’m off to Iceland in … erm, eight hours [note to self: go to bed already!], I’ll probably come back with a few more from there.

When I was a kid I collected mugs, so I've got a cupboard full of mugs.

I recently gave a way a ton of books that I hadn't reread in several years and but could still remember the plot. Shelf space was running low.

I need to clean out my closet, but there's always that worry that the minute I throw something away I'll want it again. I have a bunch of maternity stuff to sell on ebay when I get around to it.

If you meant me, I can't really take credit for it. We rent, and the paint had been done when we moved in. I have a set of photos up on my Flickr page of the rest of the house. The bookshelf is IKEA, and I'm just picky about having my bookshelves arranged to look cool.

I'm trying to slowly fill in my collection farther and farther back; I estimate that bookshelf will hold back to the WWI period.

Yes. Ah, a good time was had in that thread.

I have been out of my parents house for a decade, so no need to ask permission. Then again, my mother bought me some of the knife collection I used to have when I lived with her.

I don't have a lot of one thing, but lots of knick knacks. Things that I have a lot of that aren't neccessary/sensible include:

*6 iPods - a 3rd gen, 4th gen, 5th gen, touch, 1st gen shuffle, and a 1st gen nano. The 4th gen is busted, the rest all work (although I think the 3rd gen is on its way out)
*4 Rubik's cubes - 2 3x3's, a 4x4, and a 3x3 keychain version, from my Rubik's phase in high school.
I had a growing Mac collection: a Performa 6290 - total crap, two SEs, an iBook G4, a Power Mac G4 and a MacBook for awhile, even if half of them were broken. I ditched the SE's and the Performa at my parents when I moved a couple years ago, and I sold the iBook and upgraded the MacBook this summer. So now it's the MBP and my PM G4.

I recently moved. I discovered that I own five minivans full of stuff. That seems like too much for a single guy.

I could live without a tv, since right now I've been watching tv on my Mac with eyeTV. I could probably give away most of my books. Right now I don't even have Internet, and have been surfing on nothing but my iPhone for two weeks. I think I could do alright with a lot less. But don't take my microwave away.

As opposed to? Computer dictionaries and such? Yes, they’re all (human) language dictionaries (though I am also counting some dictionary-like reference books, like grammars and conjugation books). The two latest are Icelandic ones (since I’m in Reykjavík at the moment).

I have 19 trumpets, 3 cornets, 1 flugelhorn, 2 piccolo trumpets and 2 pianos (baby grands). As I make my entire income with the horns, I need most of them. I suppose I could manage with about 6 trumpets, it just wouldn't be as fun. I could easily do without one of the pianos, and am trying to give it to my sister. Hopefully she takes it before I move in July.

In my 20 years of playing (and 10 in apartments), I have only had one neighbor complain. She was a bitch and was told by the police that she had no standing. But, a few months ago I bought one of these ( http://www.whisperroom.com/ ) and can practice whenever I want. If, at 3 in the morning, I feel the need to play, I can at full volume.

They really are. It is just shame at how expensive they are. I wish I were better at construction as I think I could build one for $1000. I just am not competent enough with that sort of thing.

Do they have any competition, other than those Wenger practice rooms? How much do they cost?

I can't really think of any other competition. The good thing about these is that they are portable (sort of). It takes two people, but it can be assembled or disassembled in an hour. It makes it ideal for transient apartment living.

As far as cost, they are pricey. The one that I bought (6060e) was around $10k. It is 5'x5' and the "enhanced" model. But they make them in a lot of different sizes and thickness and run from around $2500 to $25k. The way I look at it is, the most expensive model is still a fraction of what many people pay for their instruments. So, playing a cheap instrument like the trumpet, I can spend more on the accoutrements.
