Haven't you noticed? Chronic cynicism takes no skills, little energy, no education, and if you do it really well in poorly-lit coffee-houses, it gets you laid.

Not sure I care for the look of the revamped Finder. But at least labels are back.

Man, the new Finder looks ugly. Is this the new Windows compatibility feature to make it easier for switchers?

Other than that it seems to be real sweet. Especially the System Monitor!

Hey everybody, it's iMike, editor-in-chief at 4 OS X.

We're taking some severe network traffic, which is why the site is slow or won't respond at all. Please mirror if you wish, it'll help ease the already choking bandwidth. We didn't know the server would go down due to so much traffic, mainly because we've never had such a huge influx before. Any assistance is appreciated.

Thank you all!

Because it has a bunch of different window styles and the finder window has icons on the left but doesn't indicate at all what they are for. Even Windows XP is more clear then this.

So what? Could you choose themes are something?

It looks like the pin strips are gone? Maybe I just can't see it or something.

The pin stripes are there, they are just darker and wider. More like the background behind tabs in Safari if you have the Aqua theme running.

I also notice a much stronger blue tint. That'll piss off the graphic professionals. They already complain that OSX doesn't offer a neutral theme. (The existing Aqua has a slight blue tint - the 10.3 has a noticable blue tint)

Expose is way cool though. Great idea.

A metal Finder sucks though. Fugly.

BTW - the left side of the Finder is supposed to be like the playlist pane in iTunes. I suspect "smart folders" will go there as well. Indeed I think that the Application folder and so forth are intended to be folders that are akin to a regular playlist.

The problem is how that pane can be removed. (And it damn well better be collapsable in an easy fashion - that's a problem with Windows Explorer)

To me they look more grey than ever - don't look at the contextual menus as they are displayed over a blue background.

Yes, but in the original thread it says:

"This screenshot shows the Finder using the Brushed Metal look."

Perhaps you can choose between Aqua and BM.

I would guess (based on the screen shot above) that "Login Items" and "My Account" and it is replaced by the new "Security" item on the Personal row.

It looks like they have combined several 10.2 preference panes into one. Including "Screen Effects" and "Desktop", and "Keyboard" and "Mouse".
I also noticed that "General" has now become "Apperance"... Is this only a name change or a sign something much much bigger ??

I think the finder looks really nice - very simple and easy to use but I'll reserve judgement until I see it in action on Monday and so should all of you. You can't say the finder is unpolished without seeing it...

...has icons on the left but doesn't indicate at all what they are for.
Maybe labels magically appear when you look at them, maybe theres an option to hide those icons....you can't tell until you see it.

Applescripts you can atach to folders, they perform actions when items are put in the folders.

Jaguar has this through the script menu.

they are already in Jaguar (and OS 9) except you have to attach them with an applescript.

They are applescripts that are attached to folders - they can be triggered when certain things happen to the folder.

e.g. <plug> Library AutoSort

My guess is the panel on the left bottom of the Finder is a real Shelf. They don't need to indicate what's going on because the user put it there and probably knows what it is.

Nothing new with the dock? That surprises me. Maybe the new features just aren't indicated in this set of screenies.

Why should he be? That is, unless he's posting idiotic comments to a Portugese message board in big red letters of course.

To get back on topic: Boy, do these shots look ugly. I really hope the final version will be prettier. Toned down stripes (I could have used a theme had I wanted `boring'), translucent titlebars gone, even more violations of the HIG (the labels menu), even more of those butt-ugly Safari-style buttons and the corresponding metal windows, etc etc.

This is of course purely my personal opinion. I hoped Panther would look more like the recent DVD Studio et al interface. Can't have everything I guess

Not so exciting. I don't know... Maybe there's a lot new under the hood. But from what I see, I'm not bowled over. Just a lot of little tweaks. Here's hoping the DVD player gets a major revamping. Has anybody here ever used PowerDVD for Windows? THAT is how a software DVD player should be implemented. Anyway, I'm glad Apple keeps innovating. I just hope there's one or two show stoppers in this upgrade to make it worth the $129...

I just got this little piece from Slashdot, which in turn got it from the macrumors forum:

First, I'm really really really pissed off because I wrote this whole message and then accidentally deleted it. Seems you can't control-Z in these input boxes.

Second, I think these shots are fake, too. I hope they are for some of the reasons outlined below. I'll be going into a lot less detail in light of the fact that I'm having to type it all again. I did do an Observation/Conclusion thing, but this time I'll just make the observations and you can make your own conclusions.

I have only skimmed the thread, so apologies if these points have been brought up. Just seemed like everyone was "WOOHOO"ing without really looking closely. And similarity to other posts is just coincidence.

OBSERVATION: In the Activity Monitor window there are strange inconsistencies.

* First there are really tacky colours. Windows type tacky colour, not beautiful Apple colours.

* Second, the "% Nice" uses a , to seperate the decimals, not a . like the rest of the %'s. This smacks to me of a slip-up by someone European making the fakes.

* Third, the "Threads" and "Processes" don't line up right. Unless this is a very early build, it's very sloppy.

OBSERVATION: Yahoo Instant messenger is in the dock and on the desktop. If this is Panther, that presumably means no Yahoo support in iChat.

OBSERVATION: In the full screen of the expose desktop, Safari is all blocked out. Why? What incriminating website could he/she be looking at?

OBSERVATION: Why are the iChat windows censored totally? Why not just block them out like the Safari window?

OBSERVATION: About Finder is all wrong. "The Macintosh Desktop Experience"? And why "Finder version 10.3" rather than "Mac OS X (10.3)" like we'd expect? These aren't big things, obviously, but still...

OBSERVATION: No build number. Seems strange, since they'll most likely be giving out preview copies on Monday, and developers will want to know what build they're working with. If it's the final release, how did slip-ups like above creep in?

OBSERVATION: In the iChat window, it says "There is no camera attached to this computer." Yet the progress bar seems to be showing activity of some sort?

OBSERVATION: The Finder window named Xdrive is metal, but not entirely consistently. The metal has a bar down the right, next to the scroll bar, unlike Safari. This on its own is nothing that important, but the grow icon thing in the bottom right seems misplaced.

OBSERVATION: In the Mail screenshot, the "Working Offline" seems all wrong. Especially the "o" in working.

It just seems all wrong to me. I'm bound to end up with egg on my face, but I thought these items needed discussion.

No, and it most likely never will. This is a policy and a marketing issue about branding. You can't project a coherent image of what you are about if passerby can't understand what they're looking at.

Just be glad they haven't gone the extra step and made theming impossible.

(P.S., I'm not anti-theming; I've had Milk and Snow.E icons installed since they came out)

I don't buy it. I think Panther is going to be a lot more than a fugly Finder, slightly reworked icons in apps which have otherwise not changed, and a re-worked *Activity Monitor*. Come on... this isn't Microsoft we're talking about here.

Well, with widescreen monitors pretty much de rigeur these days, it makes sense to me to spend the horizontal pixels, and preserve vertical pixels.

Which is why I think Apple should stick the Dock on the side by default (where 90+% of users where leave it), but that's another issue...

Boy, if this is 10.3, something is really wrong. Get off the drugs, Stevo. 10.1 Aqua was the best. Metal and Aqua look really ugly together. You can't take something that is really ugly and make people like it no matter how big of a reputation you have.
