On my laptop, some folders (rooted in icloud), have a black icon, and the icon says exec. These ones do not open properly, if you double click terminal opens up. What is this?

Just normal folders with word files inside.

They are fine on desktop.

Could they be aliases, not folders? I have this issue sometimes with aliases on servers, they stop working and look like an exec file.

They not aliases. The issues probably something to do that in cloud, not a hard drive. Fine on desktop, but black icon on laptop.

is laptop mac?

have you tried moving the folders on the desktop, and putting them back up?

are there strange characters or spaces in the folder names?

Could be the bundle bit got set on the folders' metadata. If you type 'xattr' without the quotes into the Terminal, then a space, and then drag one of the folders onto the Terminal window, and then hit Return, does it list com.apple.FinderInfo as one of the extended attributes? If it does, then if you type 'xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo' without the quotes, then a space, drag the folder in, and Return, does that solve it?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
