Please help me with some advise!

I have a macbook pro: Pretty standard just upgraded the memory when I bought it a year ago.

Machine Model: MacBookPro1,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B08
SMC Version: 1.2f10

I'm an industrial design student and I need to use some PC programs. I don't have a choice! I’m doing a class based in autocad. I love my mac and don’t want to ruin it by running windows. How do I best run PC programs on my mac.
Will running windows void for extended mac warranty.

Secondly, I'm now using more time and memory consuming software such as maya and 3d max and want to minimise the time spent rendering, how do I beef up my memory easily and relatively cheaply.

If you can’t already tell I know how to use my mac but don’t know much about hardware or specs so please speak English not comp talk.

Any help is appreciated!

Wrong forum.

Windows won't void your warranty, Boot Camp was made by Apple. I'd increase the RAM to 2 GB for more power.
Signature depreciated.

Karah, to run Windows on your Mac you should install Bootcamp. You might want to use 15 or 20 gigs (instead of 10 as suggested by Apple) to have enough room to run Maya and 3d Max. Just follow the instructions on the site and you should be good to go.

Download here, Apple - Boot Camp.

Good luck!

Not really, because Parallels and and Crossover uses a virtual environment, which might not be too good when you run Maya and 3D Max. When you run Bootcamp, you're using all the power of your MacBook Pro.

I've only got 34 free GB, so I think i'll need to get a bigger hard drive and more ram is 2 GB enough

Yeah, buy your Windows XP, and 2GB of RAM should suffice. Good luck!

Set-up a small FAT32 formatted partion to use for transfer. Both OS's can read/write FAT32. If you are worried about HD space use an eternal harddrive instead of a partion. Perhaps a FAT32 external HD would make a good scratch disk.

Hi-
When your booted into XP just use macdrive and you can read and write to your mac partition. When your booted into OS X your in luck because OS X can read the files on your XP partition no problems, but to write to the XP partition you can install NTFS-3G which will allow you to write to an NTFS partition no problems but speeds can be slow.

When I'm doing simulations in realflow for instance I'll boot into XP then when I'm done simulating my particles I'll transfer those file to a projects folder in OS X using macdrive, then boot into OS X and render those files out in Maya.

Rebooting into OS X or even XP is fast so there's not really a slow down with the workflow. If your can afford it get more ram because renderers like to use a lot of ram and don't forget to get a larger HD if you can. Depending on what you render out it can take a lot of space.

thanx, guys, u've been so helpfull!

I've just bought a 'My Book' western digital external hard drive, so that i can clone my macbook pro before i install boot camp (just incase).
So I want to clone my mac (using super duper) but also be able the use the hard drive when im running windows.
How do I format it apparently in need to format as mac (journaled) if I want to reboot but then it won't work with windows will it?
Or do I just leave it formatted as fat32 as it came

I have my external partitioned with one 100gb Mac Extended journaled and 150GB as Fat32. I use Super Duper every week or so to clone my drive onto the Mac partition. Best of both worlds.

Mediafour | MacDrive 7

I'm guessing you can install as "journaled" and then install MacDrive 7 on your Windows side to access files between Mac OS X and Windows.

You are running very heavy apps for a laptop to crunch. I recommend adding a 2 GB RAM DIMM (you did not state if you have 2x512 or 1x1 GB RAM in your two slots) to obtain the max 3 GB RAM, which is well worth the expense. Buy only quality RAM from solid vendors, one of which is OWC: Apple Mac G4 upgrades, Laptop Batteries, Memory, Drives Keep your laptop drive no more than about half full. You did not state how your external drive connects, but FYI Firewire 800 is far superior to USB 2.

Still, Firewire is always better than USB 2.0 for increased sustained throughput.

Definitely the more RAM the better, but his model of Macbook Pro will only take a max of 2GB.

Yep, lots of false advice here. The 1.83 GHz MBP is a rev A model (see also the MacBookPro1,1 entry the OP quoted). Hence no FW 800 and 2 GB RAM max.
