I've been reconsidering buying a new iMac, and was thinking about simply replacing the (presumably busted) HD in my current computer. My 20-inch iMac 5,1 has the Core 2 Duo HD it came with, and I was wondering if it was possible to buy a more powerful HD that would still be compatible with the model. Thanks.

Hard drive upgrades will work fine. Doing the swap out however is challenging. The last iMac with easy access to swap the HD was the iMac G5 rev b. Later iMacs require careful removal of the EMI shield tape, or suction cups to remove the front glass.

I know someone who can do this. I'm just looking for an HD model that's better than what I have.

It should be able to accept nearly any 3.5" SATA drive.
