Anyways, I was wondering how to access the various hardware (optical drive, HD) through Terminal. Specifically I'm trying to get at the S.M.A.R.T. parameters (temperature mainly), but really have no idea where to begin.

I've been reading up on iostat and such, but I don't think I can get much further.

I know there are apps that monitor the S.M.A.R.T. status (matter of fact, I'm running two of them now), but I just want to satisfy my own curiousity. Any advice is much appreciated.

This command gives the information about hard disks that Disk Utility gives.

This doesn't use the terminal, but if all you want is temperature data, I recommend Temperature monitor.
