"Told you so."

My prediction of what I'll say when President Hillary gets caught with her hand in the cookie jar, again.

So, here's a pretty pointless question while we wait for results to come in...

Where does the expression batshit crazy come from? Why bats and why bat shit?

Interesting question. Some quiet googling reveals that the origin is likely related to the term "batty", which also means crazy in some dialects, and that it all in turn comes from the way bats fly around haphazzardly - and crap - when stressed. IIRC most bats can't see well in daylight, and when there are humans running around yelling, echolocation probably isn't too exact either.

Also the expression "bats in the belfry" indicating that there is no one home upstairs anymore.

My understanding is batshit (also known as guano), collects in large amounts on the floor of bat caves, out gasses in the enclosed area and can drive humans nutty if they breathe too much.

The reason people care is because batshit makes a great fertilizer, and is the kind of thing you can find in quantity on a remote island, where shipping fertilizer in is cost prohibitive.

Wow, that was waaaaay off, perhaps they'll learn not to skew the polls so heavily (with their alleged +8-10 pts towards Dems). Also Hillary didn't have the protest factor on her side like Obama did, and neither was she even close to be as likeable.

Of course it is Clinton's fault. She's not alone, but of course it is hers to a large extent. She failed to win the traditionally blue states in the Midwest, that is what it has come down to. With 20-20 hindsight, she needed a Biden - someone to tell those bluecollars that she had a plan.

Did voter suppression play a part? I am certain it did, but I don't think it was enough to push FL or NC over to the blue column. Those states were close, but not that close.

Would Bernie have done better? Heck no - the only swing state he won that Clinton lost now (or that she won with a small margin) was Wisconsin, with Michigan still too close to call.

Did Comey's announcement hurt Clinton? Yes it did, and that may have been enough to tilt the election so maybe he gets some percentage of the blame, but not all of it.

No, it is on her, and I don't know who the Dems turn to now.

Perhaps my only solace this morning is the hope that Trump didn't win but that Clinton lost. I have to believe that Bernie could have done better- that Hillary is so hated by enough of the populace that they voted against her.

Right now it is just too hard to swallow that America chose Donald Trump because of what he represents.

I'm actually in America this week for work. I can't begin to tell you how not excited I am going to be going back home, flashing my passport at immigration, and having the person at the desk assume that I helped cause this.

There was so much excitement in the UK when Obama won the first time- I remember the cover of the free newspaper on the train had a headline that said something like "America has become cool again." When people heard my accent they were excited to speak to me.

I can't imagine what they will think now.

But my feelings and insecurities must pale compared to those of the groups of people the Trump movement has demonised along the way.

And I feel for my kids. They will go to school today as Americas who have been teased by students and teachers about Trump even being a candidate. I can't imagine what they will face today.

First off, can you point to a single quote or thread where I say I was exited about Clinton or thought she was the best choice available? No? I thought not.

I can completely understand someone not wanting Hillary to be president. I can't understand that this many people thought that Trump was a better choice.

America has been greatly diminished in the eyes of the world. Look at news. Financial markets are tanking. Our allies are in shock.

People keep comparing this to Brexit. There are certainly some parallels. Almost everyone I know that voted leave- and there are a surprisingly high number of them- regret it. I wonder if after this sinks in, the same will be true in America.

At least for the US, if Trump governs like he campaigned, it can be corrected in four years.

Wisconsin, Michigan, and Penn were big surprises. We drive through these areas all the time, and they seem like wastelands of what used to be prosperous states, perhaps in the 50s when manufacturing was strong. Trump promises he’ll get these jobs back, which was music to the ears of angry voters who wanted to blame this on something (immigrants, China, government, etc.), and wanted a “fix”.

Unfortunately, nobody is going to bring those jobs back, I think our global economy has just changed where the talent exists in the cities in new sectors like tech, and it is really hard to thrive in rural environments that used to support factories.

It’s sad on multiple levels, really.

If Trump goes as trade protectionist as he promises, that will bring jobs back to those places, but it's a losing long-term strategy.

Appealing to “One America” is a standard ritual after a Presidential election, and I wouldn't put any stock in it. Have a look at how divided the votes are between different groups, that won't go away. Given the things that Trump has said (and flip flopped on and denied), I'd say have a look at what he will do within the next 6 months or so. What kind of Supreme Court judges will he nominate? Someone from the fringes or someone closer to the center? What will his Administration look like?

That middle one sounds like an honest to God nightmare.

Trump has subverted pretty much all standard political rituals- it would not have been surprising for him to have reacted differently.

It may be no more than standard political platitudes, but it's better than it could have been.

Which of the proposed concerns are no longer relevant? That he's beholden to certain special interests in the US? That he's beholden to powerful Russians? That he's not the business wunderkind he claims to be and actually loses money? It seems like they're as relevant as ever once he's in office. All the more so since he claimed dozens of times that he would release them ... later.

Or did you mean the Obama horse?

He doesn't need to release them now, and since he's probably not going to run for a 2nd term (he looked very noncommittal about it), he's not going to bother turning them over. If some don't like that, well, I strongly doubt that he cares.

You can only demonize someone for so long before the negative gets wrung out into a positive (painting Trump as the ultimate political outsider), it's almost like they haven't read Rules for Radicals (which is ridiculous since it's required reading in all political, social justice, and gender studies courses). It's on the syllabus of both SJ classes I'm taking this semester, and I'm enjoying both of them immensely, even if the professors are less than enthused with me.
