iMovie export to play in Windows Media Player

What formats does Windows Media Player (on a Windows PC) understand? I want to export a movie from iMovie for a colleague to play on his Windows machine without him installing any other software. I guess I need it to work under WMP; how can I do this from iMovie?

About the only reliable thing I can think of would be MPEG-1 (yes, WMP doesn't support MPEG-4 out of the box. Isn't that ridiculous?).

Why not just export it as a Windows media file? If you have the Flip4Mac plug-in installed you get a trial option to export as WMV under the expert Quicktime export settings (edit - I don't know what features this offers... it may only export half the film if it is anything like the trial of the playback used to be):
Alternatively a noncompressed .avi should be OK as well, I would asssume?

It puts a watermark over the file if you haven't registered Flip4Mac.

I was trying to do something better (?) than uncompressed AVI. The WMV option could be the way to go. Thanks.

I would stick with MPEG-4, either regular or H.264. With proprietary codecs you never know whether you will be bitten by the "Indeo problem" again.

Except that he wants it to work with Windows Media Player, which doesn't play MPEG-4 (out of the box, anyway).
Too bad the MPEG-1 option seems to be gone. What the heck? That used to be there in some older version of iMovie. The Windows Media option works, but if you haven't bought the paid version of Flip4Mac, it'll only convert half of the movie (I just tried it).

Btw, that menu is from iMovie HD '05 and not '06 - I should have mentioned that earlier.
