http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2005/12/19/levy_lcd/

The EU plans to impose a 14 per cent import duty on imports of larger LCD screens, leading pundits to forecast a huge hike in sticker prices.
Dutch trade organisation ICT Office believes the tariff will cost its members "millions".

The tariff would be applied to all monitors that are not produced within the EU, which is the majority of monitors imported. LG manufactures some units in Wales, while Philips manufactures most of its units in the Far East.
Last year the Netherlands became the first EU member state to impose a 14 per cent tax on DVI screens as a result of a EU directive signed in 2004. Imports shifted largely to Germany, which still allows zero duty imports. Eventually the Dutch State Secretary of Finance intervened and decided that LCD monitors classified solely as a computer monitor would not have to be taxed.
This is now going to change again in all EU member states. LCD DVI computer screens larger than 19 inch - monitors which often also can be used to watch television - are likely to be taxed. This spells trouble in particular for Media Center rigs, which often require a large monitor.

Heh, they don't need justification. They impose a tax and the people will pay. Simple as that.

14% is A LOT. base price + 21% VAT + 14% of this shitty tax. Nice. 20" back above €1000.

No, people who don't know the meaning of 'fascist' suck the big one.
If this bothers you, and it would bother me, write to your MP and make a stink. That's what they are there for.

Consider that this is why we broke off from Britain, not because our president spied on us or some such nonsense, but TAXES! You're welcome to become independent nations again whenever you so choose.

Or, as it is here, I believe: base price + 25% VAT + 9% ‘technical taxes’ (added to all things IT, more or less) + now this 14% LCD tax. That’s 48 percent taxes to add to the base price. Greedy bastards.

Um, no.

Your beef with Britain was, IIRC, "taxation without representation".

Yeah, the phrase has the word "taxation" in it, so I can see how that would put you off.

Another revelation for you, my poor friend: "Dog biscuits", despite their miselading name, are not a tea-time snack, any more than LCD displays should be prerequisite to a tea-party, neither in Boston, nor elsewhere.

No need to thank me. I'm here to help.

More like 55% if it's cumulative (which it probably will be).

I’m in no way certain here, but I think taxes added to goods aren’t cumulative here, though taxes paid from your income are. But I could well be wrong.

I wish I knew what MP meant.

Also, the textbooks have it wrong. Our warcry may have been "No Taxation Without Representation," but in realiy we wanted "No Taxation." Turns out good ol' King George offered us a chance to sit in Parliament; we just flat-out refused. Why? Because the colonies had grown so used to home-rule, they couldn't handle the concept of not being allowed to tax themselves anymore. Plus, the greedy bastards refused to pay a damn cent for the war that Britain fought FOR them!

F***ing Americans...

And vegetables
(1 € for a single (!) green pepper. Or single cloned carrots (with a very Bugs Bunny-like shape.)

The iPod mini was (if you take the exchange rate into account) 50 € cheaper, I got a digital camera for 450 € there. It still sells at around 500 € on ebay

I am—those are Beijing prices. I just figured they’d be fairly similar

Also, the sense of coming home to ridiculously bloated vegetable prices is very similar, whether it’s Japanese or Chinese vegetables we’re talking about...

Hmm, I don't think the tax will happen, it sounds simply like a scouting move in the ongoing Trade Wars, probbing Asia to see how it would react.

It goes back to the Battle of Textiles with China earlier this year, which reached sone kind of equilibrium.

"But will put a tariff on your electronics instead! Ha, take that!"

Waste of time, IMHO.
