Isn't that test pointless since the MB/MBP are reportedly using 6-bit screens with temporal dithering rather than the old-school spatial dithering?

In any case, no, it's not a pointless test. The complainants say that they can see dithering in gradients, whether it's temporal or spatial it doesn't matter. If you can see dithering, you can see it - if you can't, you can't.
