I'm looking to replace the HD in my G4 Dual 1GHz (MDD) with two mirrored (RAID 1) drives. This would simplify backups, and give me more (much needed) HD space.

I'm thinking of getting two 300 GB drives and using Mac OS X's software RAID. What do you think? Is this a good solution? Should I get a RAID card instead? Should I get an external firewire enclosure? Also, I'm not sure I can use the 300 GB drives with the built in controller. Do I need to get a SATA controller?

Thanks,

-Scott

RAID-1 is no replacement for backups. Yes, it protects against drive failure, but the vast majority of lost files are due to human error, which RAID-1 offers no protection against.

I think you'd be better off putting one drive in a Firewire case and plugging it in daily for backup (or recovery )
