I've heard from other people that a deep fried turkey is pretty good, so I've decided that I want to try it this Thanksgiving. I just bought a deep fryer that will hold up to a 18-pound turkey.
Has anyone else deep fried a turkey? If you have, any tips, tricks, or good recipes?

Local guy just burned up when his deep fryer caught on fire.
Be careful.
I've heard that deep fried turkey is good, but I personally don't like the idea of a deep fried turkey.
But, have fun and good luck!

I have sampled a couple pieces of deep fried turkey and it was very good. I'm guessing the advantages are that they are very moist and cooks faster. I have not done this myself but would not hesitate. We bought a deep fryer for my father in law over the summer, I'm guessing we could probably expect a deep fried turkey any day now.
The only suggestion I would make is that you make sure the oil is up to the proper temperature, and double check that you don't have to much oil in the pot before placing the turkey in and displacing the oil . Also, make sure you do this outside.

I've not had one myself...but I"m told they are VERY good..something about the fatty duck enhancing the chicken and turkey's dryness.
Sounds really odd though.. I'll just stick with the traditional Butterball.

I also bought a deep fryer this season. Plan on deep frying the turkey also.
Sam's club had the whole set up minus propane tank for $65.
it will also make a great burner for my homebrew.
The biggest plus about the kit from Sam's is that it included a 7 gal. stainless steel pot. Nice thickness to. Not paper thin like some of the kits out there.
I am interested in recipes for marinades and injecting flavorings.

Actually I mentioned Glasgow because I've heard of their habit of deep-frying Mars-Bars in batter. I don't know if you have either Mars Bars or batter in the US, but take it from me, the combination of the two, deep-fried, is the most unhealthy thing imaginable.

Last week I say a Nigela recipe for deep fried Bounty Bars...
I'm not a Mars bar person, but Bounty? A different ball game, I just may be tempted. Only the once though...

Actually, just be careful. There has never been one that has been approved by Underwriters Lab.
Make sure you think about what you're going to do with all that oil after you've fried it.
Check out this site for some good information (and video!)

OMG, the Turducken is like Renfield's (Dracula's henchman) insatiable desire to consume as many souls as possible in one meal! All it's missing is some bacon and beef stuffing.
Having said that, it's a lot of meat. You'd have to be a turbo slut to wanna choke on that much meat in a night.

I recommend alerting the local emergency room ahead of time and telling them when you'll be eating dinner so they can have an ambulance to your house before anyone can even call in the heart attack.

Actually, deep frying a turkey is healthier than it would appear.
The high heat causes the turkey's juices to form into a steam and the positive pressure inside the turkey pushes the oil from entering. From the study I read it only adds about 5% more calories. I can't quote this study as I read it last year in the local newspaper during Thanksgiving.
Since a batter isn't used there is nothing for the oil to really cling to.

I've heard of Snickers as well, to add to the list. Deep frying candies is supposedly picking up popularity in the States, but it's actually kind of hard. I remember reading (but can't remember where, WSJ maybe?) one has to take into account a lot of external factors (like humidity) when you pop those puppies into the oil. Otherwise it won't come out proper.
As for fried turkey, my friend from Louisiana had some and said it's awesome. I want to try it now, as well as that turducken thing. Hmm, I'm hungry.
I can't wait for Thanksgiving. Mashed potatoes, turkey, cranberries, stuffing...the list goes on and on.

When I was in Coburg, Germany in 1999 I had batter dipped deep fried Bratwust. I think its safe to say that deep frying isn't an America only thing.
