My iPod is currently formatted in the Mac format. I currently only have access to PCs but I would like to update my iPod. iTunes says I can't do it. Are there any known workarounds for this problem?

You are, as we say, "stuck." Your post isn't clear on whether you want to update just the music, or the firmware too, but either way, you're still stuck. A PC cannot even see a drive formatted for HFS, while a Mac CAN see a drive in the FAT32 format, so a PC formatted iPod can have its music updated on either a Mac or a PC, while a Mac formatted iPod MUST be formatted with a Mac.

There are a few options for you. First, you could restore the iPod for PC-but that also wipes all your music off of it. There are also a few third-party softwares out there that might help you, but I can't point you to any because I haven't investigated them. Sorry.

It doesn't look like XPlay supports Mac-formatted iPods-at least it doesn't say that explicitly on their site. It DOES say that XPlay is compatible with MacDrive, so that's probably the only way it can see a Mac-formatted iPod. I wonder if MacDrive is all that it would take for iTunes for Windows to see that Mac-formatted iPod...

Well, it does say this: "Want to share your iPod with both a Mac and a PC? XPlay is the only way to achieve cross-platform harmony. With XPlay you can use a Mac-formatted iPod to bounce seamlessly between a Mac computer and PC."

According to the write-ups I've seen, it uses MacDrive and presumably has MacDrive capability built-in.

I don't mind erasing my iPod. It is formatted for Mac - can I restore it for PC using a PC with WinXP??? Do I have to use a firewire?

reformat your ipod to fat32, that way you can use it with both your mac and PCs. BUt you will have to erase all your music to do so, use podutil to suck all the songs off onto one of the PCs and then update it.

Actually, reformatting (to be accurate, "restoring") your iPod to a different format takes care of erasing all the music, just like reformatting your computer's hard drive erases all the contents of that drive.

The process is simple. After you've backed up your iPod (as wake266 describes), then plug it into a Windows computer running iTunes. iTunes will offer to restore/prepare the iPod to work with the PC. Tell it OK, and off you go!

This won't work, unless Podutil gives the PC the ability to read a MacOS formatted drive.
