Maelstrom was the Asteroids game, though I thought The Zone was waaay better.

Too bad Ambrosia never ported Harry the Handsome Executive. That game was fun.

I remember that. Fun times.

I can't remember the name, but there was a tank game, like Battle Zone, that my old roommate and I used to play on my IIci.

A couple of ones that no one's mentioned yet - Out of this World and Flashback. Both were by Delphine and ported by MacPlay. Those were two of the most fun games I played as a child.

Another long-time favorite of mine was Glider Pro.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Was Daedalus Encounter a System 7 game?

And what was the name of that ultra cool 3D space ship adventure where you had to move (step by step) around, solve riddles and flee of the space ships selve defense robots?

Apache Strike was older than System 7. It came out sometime around 1987 or so, so it probably had some form of System 3.x on its boot floppy. I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't have had a chance in hell of running on System 7...

As long as we're going for the really vintage stuff, someone might as well mention World Builder. At least you could get World Builder games to run on System 7 if you turned 32-bit addressing off.

A lot of old games can be found here. Yes, it's 100% legal as the software falls under "abandonware."

Yeah, it was a great game, although it was way too tempting to smash the other player with a block just to piss them off (I remember there was one level we always had a really tough time passing because of this - you'd take a bunch of time to set up the various pieces on the board so they'd be just right... and then one player decides to smash the other right as he/she comes by...

It was more the whole rubber-band mechanism. We would see how far we could stretch the band and then watch them fly everywhere. The physics were awesome.

How could you forget Vette, the game where you drove around a pretty realistic San Fran in a Corvette, made up excuses for the police, smooshed pedestrians and smashed up your car?

Also amazing:

Dark Castle
Lemmings/Oh No More Lemmings
Spectre
Diamonds (ooooh yeah)
Sim City
Space Quest
Kings Quest
Pretty much any Ambrosia game...

I've forgotten which ones ran under System 7 or which were earlier, but here are a few of mine in addition to what's been listed here already:

Columns
Grid Wars (long before system 7, but it was fun)
Welltris (the sequel to Tetris)
Faces
SimAnt
Solarian II
Iron Helix
Vette!
Mission Thunderbolt
Crystal Crazy (sequel to Crystal Quest)
Sky Shadow
Spaceway 2000
Mission Starlight

Casady & Greene rocked. Too bad they went out of business… but at least Glider Pro is still around (and now freeware).

Except that the OS X version of it really sucks, and to play it you really need to run the OS 9 version in Classic... which you can't do under 10.5 anymore. So yeah, it's dead.

Was Vette! the game that used huge maps? I think the first level was in San Francisco....I remember seeing the golden gate bridge.....

I always like the Leisure Suit Larry games. That may have been OS 8 though.
