i tried looking for a 3d demo on the net today and came up with zero

is bryce available for example ?

What kind of "3D" are you looking for? Google SketchUp is free and 3D.

There's Cheetah3D, FormsZ, etc.

Maya, Lightwave, Modo, Renderman, Mental Ray, Terragen, Vue... There are others but I can't remember the titles and don't want to spend time searching right now.

For terrains generation check out Terragen, it's the free program created by Matt Fairclough, the fellow who created all of the terrain effects for Digital Domain for the past several years...
