I am feeling really frustrated by Spotlight ( and Tiger in general). It's probably just because I don't understand it yet...

My primary search technique is to use the search box which is at the top of every Finder window (not the Spotlight icon in the menu bar).

I usually like to limit my search results to the Finder window in which I have entered the search term. (I think this closely mimics Panthers ability to search the selected folder only)

But, I am not getting reliable results for folders within my (File Vaulted) Home folder.
-I perform a search for a known document and it simply does not show up...
--Same results if I use the actual Spotlight menu.

I don't have any folders from my Home directory in the Spotlight Privacy tab, and I don't have any document types unchecked in the Search results pane.

Any tips on how I can get Spotlight to work for me?

Re-index the FileVault image. To do so open System Preferences->Spotlight->Privacy. Now open a Finder window and navigate to your home folder (ie. you see Documents, Desktop, Music etc. in the Finder window and have the vault-home icon in the titlebar). Drag the vault-home icon from the title-bar into the privacy list of Spotlight and wait a few moments. Now press the [-] icon to remove your home folder from the Spotlight-privacy. Spotlight should begin to re-index your home after a short moment. When it's done it should reliably find stuff in your home again.
