I am running a couple Mac computer labs and have everything set up except logins. We are using an Xserve with OS X Server 10.4 and Open Directory for the logins. My problem is this: when I try to log into each computer from the OS X login window, the login process times out. As far as I can tell, the LDAP server settings are correct on the server, and they are set in Directory Access on the client machines. Neither I nor a technician we hired can figure out what's up.
Using tcpdump, I have verified that the computer is attempting to communicate with the server, but nothing shows up in the server logs. Any idea where I should look or any other information needed? I can post logs and such if necessary...just tell me what info you need. I am desperate to get this working as we are in the third week of school and students still can't login using their own accounts.

There are a number of freaky settings when it comes to maintaining a server based setup.

You might want to do research at AFP548 and take a look at articles such as this one. Another site, which I'm less familiar with, is http://macenterprise.org
